My wife gave in to my daughter while grocery shopping at Wally World and bought her a cute Barbie fishing rod and reel combo. It's great for panfish, as long as they are small, but the drag and gear ratio can't handle small bass or cats. My little girl would crank and crank and crank and still not have the fish in sight. She actually resorted to walking backwards while reeling, which seemed to help. We exchanged it the next day for a Shakespeare spincast combo which we'll try out later.

It's great that you are taking your kid/kids fishing. How many do you have and what ages are they? I decided early that I would let my kids learn to fish with some of my spinning rods as they seem to be even easier than spincasting rods in some respects. Spincasting gear just seems to rust out in one year and I just got tired of throwing rods and reels away.

My daughter will be 4 in December and my son 9 in January. Both love anything to do with the outdoors. My son is beginning to show an interest in hunting so I may let him tag along Thanksgiving morning.

Oh, I completely forgot to add that the Shakespeare spincast combo works great. She can cast it a mile and reeling in the sunfish is almost too easy.

That is great. I took my soon to be 4 yr old muzzleloading. He loved it till he got cold. I was really proud of him. He sat still and quite for almost an hour and half. Wished we had seen something but there is always next time. He wants to go turkey hunting this spring. And loves fishing or at least being around the water and being with Daddy. I love that hope he will always want to be around me. Time will tell....

I've set up a make-shift blind in the forks of a massive fallen oak on a ridge that is an easy walk from the truck. Over the years, I've taken several bucks there but the wind patterns almost require a tree-stand. More than likely, the highlight of the outing will be the squirrel that barked at us for two hours or a psychotic red-headed woodpecker. But, hey, that's what memories are made ofemoSmile .
