Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots for the freezer!, 4/29/12, Travis and Brother

Well...here goes! I'll be loved by some and blasted by others butI really don't care. emoParty

Tatterhead Travis andI planned a trip this morning to do something I haven't done in quiteawhile. Float shiners down on River park. Got on the water about 8:30 and ran to some barge tie ups where i learned that one battery for my trolling motor was shot. Completely drained after a night of charging too! I had litle power but we manged to float beside the barges Ok.. I caught a 17 3.4 Smallie right off the bat then a good spot went in the well. Travis in the mean while was trying to figure out how not to hang up on the bottom. (hasn't really fished alot)

Decided to run downtown after that and sit on some bridges. That wasn't a mistake. We both started filling the well with decent Spots and a few small ones. Then it happens....Travis hooks a really nice Smallie and what a fight he had. I was coaching him on when to haul and when not too. Making sure the drag was right and he did everything to a T. We landed his fish and the excitement he had was unreal. His first Smallie ever and its right at 4 pounds. Not bad! YUP...In the well it went!

In the next hour i managed a nice Smallie too. alittle over 4 and in the well it went. While adding some spots here and there we decided to run back to the ramp and meet my wife who had gotten me a replace mt battery. We had some power now. :) My brother rode with her to help with the battery so he jumped in the boat for the rest of the day.

Went up to the dam with a few spots here and there then ran back down river for a repeat of that morning. Not too bad...managed to get some decent spots to the well and a few more short Smallies with one small Google Eye. (Travis is eating that one) God only knows how many Spots we caught today. I would have lost count anyways.

I had not floated the park in a long time and sorta miss not going down there. When the kids fished, we always had a good time.

Well...here's the photos. FIRE AWAY!

Re: Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots MASS MURDER!, 4/29/12, Neighbor Travis

that is murder for sure.

What is the limit on bass on Nickajack?

Re: Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots MASS MURDER for the freezer!, 4/29/12, Travis and Bro

Just for the record, google eyes count toward your bass limit. Crazy as it sounds you can only keep 5 total bass per person, google eyes included. You can keep 15 spots per person above the creek below the ramp. The big question is how the limits are calculated when you mix in smallies or LM with spots. Can you still have 15 fish, say 1 smallie, 4 LM and 10 spots??? Need someone smarter than me to figure that one out.

And it looks like some of those spots still have eggs. Please confirm. Did you find eggs when you cleaned them?

Good question Michael. I always thought it was per species of largemouth... Could be wrong!

Yes. Eggs in the Spots.

Good news on the spots. All we caught yesterday were males except for maybe one or two females. Let us know how the smallies taste, I heard they were really good.

To my knowledge, google eye (rock bass) are NOT considered a black bass and have a limit of their own (20). The limit for largemouth and smallmouth combined is 5 total with only one being a smallmouth, AND you can take another 5 spotted bass (except for the special area just below Chickamauga dam to South Chickamauga creek, where you can take 15 spotted bass). This is VERY different from the regs on Chickamauga, where you can only take 5 black bass COMBINED (largemouth, smallmouth, AND spotted) with only one being a smallmouth.

From the regs:

Nickajack:

•Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass: 5 per day in combination, only one may be smallmouth bass
•Largemouth Bass: 15 inch minimum length limit
•Smallmouth Bass: 1 per day, 18 inch minimum length limit
•Spotted Bass: From Chickamauga Dam downstream to mouth of South Chickamauga Creek, 15 per day, no length limit. Rest of reservoir: 5 per day, no length limit.
•Crappie (all species): 15 per day in combination, 10 inch minimum length limit
•Catfish (all species): no harvest limit for fish under 34 inches in length; only one fish over 34 inches in length may be harvested per day
•Striped Bass or Hybrid Striped Bass: 2 per day in combination, 15 inch minimum length limit
•White Bass: 15 per day, no length limit
•Yellow Bass: no creel or length limit
•Walleye: 5 per day, 16 inch minimum length limit
•Sauger: 10 per day, 15 inch minimum length limit
•Paddlefish: 2 per day; season is open from April 24 through May 31.
•Rock Bass: 20 per day, no length limit
•Redear Sunfish: 20 per day, no length limit
•Bluegill/Warmouth and other sunfishes: no creel or length limit

RE: Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots MASS MURDER for the freezer!, 4/29/12, Travis and Bro

With that many spots and rocks I would have let the smallie go but one or two is not going to make a difference. emoRolleyes The thing I noticed in the picture was even though you buddy was not too familiar with fishing like you commented, his on his board are quite noticeably larger then the ones on your board. emoPoke You must just be a good guide. emoEvil Jmax

Wait...the board picture is gone....what happened?

Now that I'm clear on the way the limit works...that photo could be republished Larry.

You just upset I ate those smallies. :)

nope u eat all u want.just because i don't eat any thing that comes out of the water don't mean that you cant.man is at the top of the food chain.but don't fault me because i think the smallie should have been set free.i bet there are a few others that think like me on this.but it was like burger king u had it your way.lol

Re: Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots MASS MURDER for the freezer!, 4/29/12, Travis and Bro

Your a good man Larry. We tried like hell to get Long Jon Silvers to cook them up but they didn't like us tossing them up on the counter.

Re: Buoy-Master, Riverpark, Smallies and Spots MASS MURDER for the freezer!, 4/29/12, Travis and Bro

So am I reading it right that you can only keep one smallie??? I've been in severeal tx's where some one weighed in 2 small mouth, including the CFF this past weekend. How does that work?
