Beetlespin and I launched from the RiverPark about 7am. Current was ripping and it was cold...we fished current breaks all day with jigs and a jigging spoon. As the sun came up the skies got as clear as can be and we had to work hard for what we caught...Pretty slow day overall but with some persistence we did manage a few bonus fish.

We started off the morning with 2 trophy size drum maybe 15 lbs each on jigs off near some wood structure, mine came first and not to be outdone Beetle slammed the hook into one of his own just downstream. We fished the rip rap a bit and struck out...we then went on to a nice ledge with where an eddy formed and fished that for a while since we marked a few fish. I fished a 1/4 oz jigging spoon for a bit and caught 4-5 yellow bass and a couple of bluegill in 20ft. One bluegill was real nice!

We fished on with the jigs and after not catching anything we decided to punt and switch to crankbaits since the jigs were not working out as planned (last time we went the jigs nailed a lot of fish). After fishing cranks for a few minutes Beetlespin kicked off the bite with a nice SPAAAAT as he calls them :). After that we went back to the jigs on current breaks - I was swapping between a jig and my Cordell spoon jig and a I caught a nice scrappy smallmouth on a current break on the spoon. Since it seemed like the bite was picking up later in the day we fished on...It was slow but there were a few nibbles here and there keeping us fishing. I had caught a nice SPAAAAT myself last time with Beetlespin on a rock point. I fished it with a spoon jig for a while and got hung up....after a few minutes Beetle threw a jig in the current near the rocks and hauled in what we think was a nice Meanmouth...It sure looked like a Smallmouth with a nice bronze color but had the tongue patch of a spot.

We got back to the ramp about 4pm (almost fished dawn til dusk) and talked to an old timer there, who mentioned he also had a very slow day. We had to work hard for these fish but it was an excellent day to be on the water and a whole lot better than being at the office. The day warmed up nice, not a lot of wind, I got to see a good bit of the River today riding around in Beetle's Cadillac, and he kept me laughing most of the trip! Thanks Beetlespin - I'll be back for more next Saturday at the CFF RiverPark tournament and Picnic!

Yeah, that sure looks like a mean-mouth. I hope you guys did not put it back. It would be nice to send down to the region III biologists and see if it is an F1 or seated deeper on the tree.

Sorry Carl - Meanmouth was released - It was seated up under a tree when Beetle yanked him out but I don't think that's gonna be much help...emoBigsmile The 2 other spots were given to an old timer at the ramp. They may end up being served for Thanksgiving! emoHungry

David, you need to take a lesson from Lance on how to how a fish up for a pic. The one he is holding must weigh 8 pounds. I noticed you use the bent arm pose. emoBigsmile emoGeezer Great day on the water with a very nice guy. You ought to see him hit a golf ball. emoEek

Yep King - I know it...It also helps to take pictures at an upward angle to make em look bigger! If you notice my picture of me and my monster smallmouth was taken from a downward angle...making both the angler and the catch appear smaller than in real life with a pitiful stature....Next time I'm hoppin' up on the bow and long arming my Fish! emoTongue

Good job Dhaun! Looks like a nice bunch of fish. Sorry it was a slow day but hey, at least you had good weather! Thanks for the post! Keeps those of us who are working up to par on whats going on. Hope to get to go down there next week one day but I bet they won't be pulling on the day I go. emoLaugh

David, your day sounded like ours until we found fish holding on a couple of spots. The key we found was to fish the first drop off the bank in water with reduced current. These spots with 15+ feet of water seemed to be the ticket. The other key was to fish these spots slow and really spend time on them. The one spot were we caught 6-7 smallmouth was about 100 feet long and we fished it for probably 2 hours or more.

I can guaranttee you today was MUCH warmer than yesterday. We are going Friday and it looks to be a great weather day.

Good report David. That is for sure a meanmouth. I've caught two of them this year and they all looked just like that. Scrappy little devils. I wonder how fast they'll grow compared to spots and small mouth? Be interesting to see in a few years.

FF, Missouri started hybridizing spots and smallmouth about 8 years ago. They even have a state record catagory for them. The last time I viewed the current state record, the meanmouth was only 5.8 lbs. Just like spots they are very slow growth fish. If you catch them in Tennessee they need to be harvested..........

The reason I am asking is this bad boy(girl) had a spot of teeth on it's tongue. I specifically remember telling my fishing buddy about it. I say there is no way this is anything but a smallmouth.

OK I don't get it. Is the third picture susposed to be the meanmouth? If so that is just a spot. Fish can change there colors at will the the strips come and go depending on the mood of the fish, stress level, etc. Check out the smallmouth pics from the Heat Tech post to see two smallmouth with completely different patterns. We have caught hundreds of spots around the Riverpark to Mocassun Bend and I have never seen a fish that I thought was a smallmouth but had a tounge patch. The only fish I have ever seen that might have been a meanmouth was a 3lb "smallmouth" that my co-angler caught last year in our work tourny. I would have sworn that thing was a spot until we put it in the livewell. About an hour later we took the fish out and the smallmouth pattern appreared and we knew for sure it was a smallmouth. I cannot remeber it having a tounge patch but it could have.

Next time someone catches one of these meanmouths keep it and take a lot of pictures. Send me a PM and I will meet you somewhere as I would like to see one.
