I have to admit one thing here.........

I do not fish a bunch when turkey season is open!

I moved to NW Georgia four years ago. My two best friends in the world (Gates and Rauls) have made the trip out here to turkey hunt each year.

I have hunted turkeys in Arkansas, Missouri, Misssissippi, Alabama, and Texas!!! I rank GEORGIA at the top of my list!!

This new warm front is gonna make me get up early for the next few weeks! It is now time to get up and listen for the gobblin'.........

Post up if you turkey hunt! I like watchin' folks shoot a turkey almost more than shooting one myself!

Here is a picture of a MACKDADDY I killed last year! Rauls and I hunted this rascal for five days! Got close but never pulled the trigger!

He made me PROMISE to hunt this sorry SOB and kill him! Then stomp his bloody head in the ground, and call him as I was tote'in this big rascal up the mountain!!

I killed the turkey exactly one week later...........

I dang near died on the two mile walk back to the truck!

Here is the pic of my best one last year......

I did call Rauls and cuss him out because I had to hike up the mountain alone, but was happy to TORCH this stubborn sucker!!!

Back when I was younger I hunted for them a lot. However I have done the opposit of you and now that I am addicted to fishing I cannot get away from the bass spawn long enough to go after those crazy birds. Now I hunt them ever now and then at Bi-lo or the Wal-Mart Super Center.;) Jmax

Unlike J-Max, I've never hunted them "a lot." Too much interference with the best spring fishing, especially when you're a "weekend warrior." I just can't do it all... I will someday when I've got 7 days a week to do it, but I'm not there yet. That said, I usually make one or two obligatory turkey hunts a year... usually for "writing" purposes. I've had some close calls however I have yet to pull the trigger on one. I would like to change that... just not willing to give up my best fishing to do it.

I killed one in HS but I havent really hunted since moving down here. I don't really have a place to go and I sure like fishing through the spring as well.

Hey Richard,

Most turkey hunters (Myself, Gates, and Rauls) just have to be hunting on the opening day!!

But the weather is a huge factor! Last year I had Gates, Rauls, and Sam on the opening morning!

I took Sam to the Cohutta Wilderness Area on the second day. The temp was 19 degrees and Grassy was SNOW covered!

In my humble opinion the best turkey hunting in Georgia is the LAST week of the season.

A couple of years ago on the last day of the season, I took a die hard Marine (Jarhead---aka Alabama LeBron) on his first Georgia turkey hunt!!

We stood on a mountain top and heard so many turkeys gobblin' I was "dazed and confused" on which one to go after! To say it was a "Chuckle Fest" is an understatement!!

Of course I picked the WRONG one, and by 8:00 am ALL gobblin' stopped!

Gave up and was heading to the truck at 11:30am, made one last call within 400 yards of the truck. The rest is history! The Jarhead-LeBron turkey hunting story from that point on is one I have laughed at 1000 times!

I will post it up when I have more time to type................

It will make your hurt yourself laughing!

If you ever want to go on a turkey hunt "after" the best fishing is over........

May is a fantastic month to turkey hunt in the "Land Of The Peach"

PM me when you get sick of fishing in May, I would bet a dollar to a dime we can find one to change your luck!!

I'm not sure if it's written by the same "Sam" you're talking about, but this is one of my all-time favorite turkey stories: http://www.chattanoogan.com/articles/article_83488.asp

I am sorry to say (sort of, but not really) that I've got almost every weekend in May already booked. Maybe I'll get lucky and somebody will cancel. You'll be the first one I go looking for. emoThumbsup

When the Turkeys go to gobbling. I park my boat. That is unless I need my boat to get to the turkeys. I love Turkey Hunting more than Deer hunting. Looking forward to opening Day.

By the way, Deep fried Wild Turkey...............WOW!!!

I love chasing the ole birds, whether its in the oak hammocks of Florida or the razor backs of the cumberland plateau, nothing makes my blood boil like a boss hammering in the morning light. Man, I am looking forward to that first gobble. If anyone is dying to go, and doesn't have a place holler at me. I have some land on the edge of the plateau, near the Caney Fork. Birds in the morning and Browns in the afternoon: c'mon April!

Now that is Springtime living at it's finest.

Just shout at me!
Same here Churly. I do the same thing in that area. It is birds in the morning but rainbows in the afternoon. I may give you a holler and chase some birds with you this spring.

The Georgia turkey season does not open until 03/24/07.

I have been out listening every morning this week. The gobblers are flat more yodelin' right now!

Best pre-season gobbling I have seen since moving to the land of the peach!

I think I enjoy the listening/scouting as much as the hunting!

Should be a SMOKER come Saturday 03/24!emoDance emoDance

I got drawn for the Oak Ridge WMA Turkey Hunt on April 14-15. I have been told I SHOULD go. I'm not committed yet however. Anybody out there know anything about Oak Ridge WMA (and turkeys)?

I got drawn for a deer hunt this past season on the Tower Shielding Unit and there was alot of turkey sign! I'm not familiar with any of the other areas but I bet if you could spend a day before-hand scouting you should be able to locate some birds. The place looks real birdie!
