I have two All Star TN cork handle spinning rods that I am replacing the Lew's reels with Shimano 2500 Symetre's. I used electrical tape to attach the Lew's and wonder if anything new has hit the market to attach said reels when they arrive.

I got both reels off e-gay NIB for $138.85 shipped.

Thanks,
Bill

I would avoid using electrical tape. If you ever decide to take the tape off you will be left with sticky black tape residue that is a PITA to clean off.

Why did you use tape in the first place? Am I missing something?emoScratch

Bill I tape mine on first with the fibreglass tape. Not to thick and then use the electrical tape real tight over that. No residue and the reel stays put.

Why, because that is the only way to attach the reel. The handle is solid cork, no reel seat. It is old school. I wouldn't own a spinning rod with a reel seat.

BTW: I bet that Venture flies with that deuce and a quarter on the back.

The all cork handle is called a "Tennessee handle". I have made many with this type handle and would not fish a rod with fixed reel seat....I use a nylon re enforced strip first then use the electrical tape....it ain't a problem if you need to remove the reel....you can use sandpaper if it is sticky.....best handle that a fisherman can use....unless you have a graphite handle but you must use the tape then...FA

Electric works but it will get gummy.

Tommy Tape (self-fusing silicon tape found at electric supply stores and occasionally at chain bigbox hardware stores) works great. No residue and it doesn't get slick like electric tape can when it is wet. I believe Rod Wrap is repackaged Tommy Tape.

Some of the Tennis grip wraps are similar to Tommy Tape, and they have other open weave stuff (ie mesh-like) that will work too.

Use 3M brand electrical tape, it is the best, won't ever get gummy or sticky. The off brand tapes are cheaply made and they will melt and get sticky. As stated above use 2 pieces of the fiberglass reinforced tape to hold the reel on then go over it with the 3m tape, any color.

I was thinking the same thing Doc

IMO 3M electrical tape still gets gummy and sticky, however it is less pronounce than cheaper brands.

I have used the 3M tape for 40 odd years and have never had it to be sticky. Now maybe you could get some kind of solvent on your tape and it would break it down. There is still a few products made in the good ole USA that isn't imported from china and the 3M stuff is still the best, from tape to abrasives.

I should have been more explicit about the electrical tape....like Doc say, "3M" and you can do it in a variety of colors....I have several.

My brother-in-law works for 3M in adhesives (including electric tape), meaning I have a free supply.;) However, I still don't use it as it is still gummy (no solvents unless sweaty hands counts). 3M doesn't leak around the edges of the wrap like other less brands do but when you go to remove old tape (say once a year for reel maintenance), it is gummy underneath. Also ALL electric tape is slick when wet, sorry but sometimes fish even when it is raining. To each there own (I do like your ideal of using drywall tape as an underwrap to help reduce the gummyness).

Use the tape of your choice, I'll use 3M. It has never failed me as long as I have been fishing. Maybe you can find some super duper brand that is good, happy hunting.

I'm sort of new on the block, but I don't see any negatives to reel seats on spinning rods. Most of mine have reel seats. I don't think that I have ever had a reel seat fail me. They are easy to change if I ever need to replace or repair one. Sensitivity isn't really an issue with me. I line watch most of the time anyway and detect most strikes visually rather than wait for the jerk on the end of the line.

3M has never failed me either, however it leaves something to be desired in terms of gumminess/stickiness and also wet weather performance. In my opinion, I have found something better (fused silcon tape, Tommy Tape is just one brand). Too bad you rather discount something "new" or "different" based on your 40 years of experience instead of being open minded. Same mind set would have you probably still using mono, without considering using spectra based braid for some applications, just because you have always used mono and have learned to deal with its flaws too.

More than one way to skin a cat.

R14, use what you please, so will I. I was just trying to save you some heartaches about finding some good tape. If you have a reel seat, you won't need it unless you want your hand to stay warm in the winter.

PS...I have tried the braid and gave up on it last year, mono is fine with me.

I have seen a tape that stuck to its self but not to the handle and was tacky when it got wet, unlike the 3M electrical tape. It was available in several colors. I did a cursory search for it but couldn't find it. The wrap mentioned earlier for tennis handles and golf handles might be the tape I am thinking of.
