If I was bass fishing and I knew the bass was exactly where I was fishing depth cloud cover water clarity etc .. Id start with a 1/8 oz black maribou jig tied with a few rubber strips in the body like legs, on 6lb flourocarbon. and if that still didnt work, and I was in water less than 8 feet Id tie on a fat wieghtless plastic worm same rod and line .. and let it slowly drop down to the fish, then twitch it after min or so if they didnt hit on the fall.. and work that back to boat or out of the strike zone, and repeat..
If all else fails .. and I knew there was bass there over 5 lbs Id go find a creek and catch some shiners or chubs, or find shad.

But Generally if I cant catch em on a crankbait, spinnerbait, or some type of plastics ... its A. either time to go home , or B. go find some live bait

I am 41 and have a lure that is almost as old as I am. It is a Doll Top Secret and is baby blue. It runs a couple of feet deep and looks crazy in the water. One of my buddies laughed the first time he saw me pull it out. That's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Four cast and four small bass later (on Watts Bar) - he is a believer. I now call this little guy "ole ugly" rather than "old faithful". If nothing bites - something will bite this one. Find a dock or exposed wood and something will take a bite. They cost about $15 bucks on ebay when one comes up. They were made by Thompson Lures in Knoxville.

I dont have one of those " go to lures ", but when its real tough a pint of Brandy works very well. But after a few long chugs I'll start flippin a DJW 3/8 oz. ( custom colored ) Watermelon jig with matching Zoom chunk in heavy cover and that usually gets me bit. I know its the jig that makes the difference but I like to think the Brandy helps

If I had to catch a fish I would throw a LUCKYCRAFT RC 1.5 GREEN PERCH crankbait. If I wanted to catch a good fish or needed a kicker in a tournament I would throw a 1/2 spinnerbait or a 1/2 jig flipping. If I wanted to catch a fish for fun it would be a SPIT N IMAGE with a feathered treble.I would rather get kicked in the privates than throw a carolina rig.

If I wanted to catch a big fish, I too would have to go with a pig & jig. </p>

If I could though, I'd rather get him on a frog, or a topwater (more fun).

If I could only use one artificial bait no matter the time of day, year and conditions, sign me up for a 5" Yamamoto Senko in Green Pumpkin with Purple & Emerald flake & a luminous chartreuse core shot - fished whacky style.
