Fishing Superstitions

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

Two rules in my boat: 1- In Tx's, the livewell must not be filled with water until the first keeper is caught. 2- No talking about work!

I posted some thing very similar"Just for Laughs" a few weeks ago. one thing some do is not looking were you cast the first cast.
or not keeping the first fish caught but offering it back,

No Banana's in the boat!

And I always tell clients that the one sentence I never want to hear said out loud.... "I just want to catch one more."

If they say that, we might as well pack up and go home. emoLaugh

hmmmmm....what if you had a banana for breakfast and THEN got in the boat? emoPoke

I think a camera and fresh batteries is a far worse curse ;)

I wasn't aware of the banana thing. In fact this passed Saturday I dropped a perfectly good, half eaten banana on the floor of the boat because I had to reel in a fish.

It wasn't a keeper but I did finish the banana afterwards.

The cow thing I have heard but it has never held true for me, however the first cast thing always seems to be true, get it out and back fast.

The only thing I do slightly superstitious is to never try anything new on the first few casts. I always like to catch at least one with the tried and true lures before experimenting.

The banana thing is hog wash at least for me. I like peanut butter crackers along with a banana...its a good snack. Now I dont fill the livewells before I catch a fish, and I follow the cow therory, and if I get on a hot streak, I wear the same things. I dont carry a new outfit (rod n reel) on Tx day, I like to catch a fish on it 1st, but I do like using a new lure on Tx day. I only wear fishing t-shirts.

ELVIS has left the building...Thank Ya, Thank ya very much.........

Here is one that I remembered. It's refered to as a 'bad boat day' and applied to all boats set in the water, not just the fishing kind. It is stated as "If there is any thing that goes wrong on the way to the ramp, the rest of the boating will be bad, so it will be better to bo back home." Has anyone exerienced this?

I went out on a charter with "Fishtails" out of La Paz Baja Mexico in March. Here is part of what they say about Bannans:

Conversely, I have seen the ocean suddenly come alive when bananas are thrown overboard. I have seen all manners of bad luck turn 180 degrees when the bananas get trashed! Some anglers (like me) are so convinced about bananas that I'd really rather you not only leave the bananas back at the docks, but also keep the Banana Boat sunscreen, your banana flavored lip balm, your banana chips and banana candy off of my boat! If you can afford to change your underwear, I'd really even prefer you not wear your Fruit-Of-the-Looms on my boat either! I mean it... I don't understand it, but I make my living trying to get YOU and your amigos onto fish and I´d prefer you not make my day any harder! Don't laugh... this stuff is for real!

The whole page is pretty funny.

One question - does it count as having a bannana in the boat if I eat it on the way to the lake?

Are you serious? Your gonna have to "splain" this one!

Yes, serious stuff. Old nautical concern. I could cut and paste some reasons why... but instead, go to Google and search "superstition bananas in boats" (no quotes). You'll find lots of references.

If you don't think much of Bananas on a boat, Just get caught with a banana on the boat of one of those Tampa Bay boys. You will find yourself in the water unless you are lucky enough to be able to reach the dock.

Another no-no is loose pocket change.

Ive heard the banana superstition alot, never get on an offshore charter boat with one, they will flat tell ya about it. One my old next door neighbor used to swear by is that you never go fishing until all your chores are done or you wont catch any fish. It seems to partially hold true for me. If the honey-dos are pilled up on me and I sneak away for a quick trip, I usually do pretty poor.

Does anyone here other than me go"Here fishie, fishie" to make the fish bite?
Second, I always put the first fish I catch, no matter what kind or size in the live well or my trip turns out sloooow.
Third, Doc is so right about the cows!
Fourth- Wind from the north, fishermen go forth. Wind from the south, blows the hook into the fishes mouth. Wind from the west, fish bite best. Wind from the east, fish bite the least.
Jeff

I've also heard that it is bad luck to take a whiz off the bow of the boat.

The only thing I see wrong with the bannana bit is that they draw gnats which would agrivate you to death.

You gotta watch out if you go fishing with Doc and Rsimms......they will beat the living day-lights out of ya.....using them live little fishes.....I know from experience......FA
