GA Boat Registration Rant

I bought a used boat from Missouri... I had no registration numbers or anything but a bill of sale for the boat and trailer. I live in Ga so I just went online and applied for registration... filled out the forms and paid the fees they gave me a temporary number and emailed all copies of the bill of sale to the DNR office with the temp number in the subject line. I got a sticker in about 2 weeks.

I live in GA and just last month register my boat in TN. that also gets u out of paying the personal property tax of $225 a year for owning a boat in Ga. you should go back and register it in TN

So if you register the boat in Tenn where do you register the trailer? Wouldn't it have to be in Tenn as well?

Are you kidding ME? I just paid a fortune to get two cars and a Harley registered and tagged at the 6.5% freaking tax. Now they are going to charge me for the privilege of having a boat? It just keeps getting worse,Geez, this state has gone to the dogs since i lived here from "79" to "2005". We need to change Governors! Hindsite..........................

Next boat WILL be registered in TN!

you don't have to register a boat trailer in tn.

So you just walk into any Tennessee courthouse and tell them you want a tag for your boat trailer with no Tennessee mailing address?

Just trying to understand in case I want to change.

When bought my Stratos used in TN I just got a bill of sale that included boat and trailer. Well I moved to the state of South Carolina where they also don't title or tag boat trailers. When I went to the DMV in VA they would not give me a tag for the trailer because I did not have a title for it. I got copies of the TN law and SC law and showed it to them and the lady told me " we have never seen this before" so to make a long story short the Commonwealth of VA had to issue me a title for my boat trailer and then a tag all for "tax purposes" . I was a learning process but now I have title and next year I will get a permanent tag so the trailer will always be registered in VA regardless of where I move to next.

You do not have to tag a trailer in TN.

I went through this same kind of crap when I lived in GA and bought a bass boat. So glad I live in TN now. These kind of taxes plus the state income tax saved is like making $2000 more a year.

I live in GA and reg. my boat in TN. I think you can purchase a tag for the trailer which is just a trailer tag you pay a one time fee of like $75 for the tag, not a yearly. so when you go to another state that require a trailer tag. when I reg. my last boat about 6 years ago @ the tag office off bonny oaks the lady ask me if I wanted a tag, I didn't cause I'm just barley live in ga about 2 mile from the line and don't travel. the law suggest to reg. your boat in the state that is primary use or docked I'm sure the lady @ the TN tag office could answer.

Sorta same issues. I live in ringgold and Bought mine used in tn. I sent the bill of sale in to ga to register the boat, not thinking about the trailer. When I found out I had to register the trailer, I was told I needed to show the bill of sale. Well, it gone already. I screwed a plate off an old jeep I had onto fender and there you go. I usually only use I on the chick anyway

So you are not worried the Ga law enforcement might pull you over for not having a current tag decal?

I am trying to learn something here...

If Tennessee doesn't require a tag but Ga and other states do... how do you get around that? If I am pulling a boat with Ga plates on my truck and I get pulled over for no tag on the trailer wouldn't I get a ticket? Maybe I am missing something.

Greg

If you have a GA plate on your truck, a GA boat registration and no Tag on the trailer, yes you will get a citation. If you have a GA drivers license, a GA tag on your truck and a boat registered in TN with no trailer tag I guess you could always claim it was not your boat? We have a GA Game Warden on this forum, maybe he will weigh in and straighten us out on this issue.

I also found out that you don't get a property tax notice on boats valued under $7500, which is mine (thank goodness) or if you do get a notice from the tax assessor all you need to do is send it back in with a value of under $7500. Of course I wouldn't try that with a 2015 Ranger!

When I lived in Georgia and when I was ever asked about my trailer having no tag, I always told the officers that I keep the boat at my folks house in Tn (the truth) and I'm down here to fish a tournament (also true).
I always had a Tn sticker on the boat. Never got a ticket or had any officer have a problem with that. Just way too much of a problem getting a bill of sale for trailer that I purchase 20 years ago and way before the trailer law was passed.

I worry all the time, but I live about 2 min from interstate, and like I said
I rarely use it anywhere but TN. The yr sticker is not very visible and I run
Into few cops between home and tn line. I just take that chance to enjoy my
Boat.
