GA Boat Registration Rant

Here's the bottom line on Ga. Law relating to vessel registration and trailer tagging. Boat owners are allowed to register their vessel outside of their home state if it is docked at a marina in another state or if another state is the primary use state ( such as living in Ga. And fishing mostly in Tenn.) But if you live in Ga. With Ga. Drivers license and Ga. License plates on your vehicle, the trailer should be tagged respective to your home state. My trailer tag cost me $12.00 for a year in Ga.

So when does the state figure out you own a boat and send you the bill for use tax or luxury tax or whatever they call it?

Ga. DNR has a database on all vessels registered in Ga. County Tax Assessors will sometimes search this data for vessel owners in their respective counties. Upon locating a vessel owner they will mail them a personal property tax form to document the vessel and value. Anything valued over 7500.00 will garner a tax bill from the tax assessor. They usually use a black book on boat values similar to the one for automobiles.
