Figured it out the grass is gone to hide from the eclipse! Didn't want to get burned

So going back a few months when tva had the tires everywhere with the strobes on it somebody here said it was measuring temps! I now call bs!!!! I think they were measuring chemicals when those things were all over the lake the grass was thriving shortly after they were removed well so was all the grass! Weather water temps and flow does not kill the grass can't go from bright green thriving to. Town mushy clumps of crap in just a few days! I really think a lot of you are really wishful thinkers Hopi g it's the weather the water the flow and not tva or aquatic solutions killing it! I too was hoping that it was just late but looking back I'm a firm believer it's all been killed just hope I'm wrong

The grass is there in certain places for sure.... but in other places where the grass has been historically heavy... way away from any marina or public area... the bottom is slick with nothing but dead slimy black goop. I did find one area last week with very healthy tall green hydrilla at least 5 or 6' tall off the bottom... it was in a small pocket about 50 yards long...

I know there is grass... just not anywhere close to normal. Sprayed, weather, grass carp, current, eclipse, Jmax took it with him to Arkansas... whatever... I don't have a clue.... I do know it is very different than in years past.

In an area that had 4' tall healthy grass a little over a month ago it has nothing but the black slime on the bottom now.

Just some food for thought, I have heard several people say they saw pellets being put out when the water was down this winter. Is there any truth to it, who knows but I can tell you from looking at all the surrounding lakes (Guntersville and Nickajack) something here is different. They have had the same weather we have and they have tons of grass!

Thanks Greg, Black goop only sounds like one thing. I wish we could get some photo or video evidence of them spraying these types of area's. Are they doing it at night when no one is around? With as many people that fish this lake you would think someone has seen this actually happening and gotten some photos or videos. Also has anyone contacted Mike Jolley to get his thoughts on all this?</p>

When you come out of HBSP go left to the first cut through at Patton island. That little pocket had lots of tall green grass a few weeks ago. Over by those blowdowns was thick grass... I got nothing but black sludge Saturday morning with a worm dragging through there.

The hump right in front of HBSP at the channel marker... nothing but black slop... "although I did catch a 5lber Friday before last on that drop in about 20 FOW there)

Run up to the island on the right before the nuke plant.... the south end of that Island and the area between the island and golf course has beautiful thick grass... Wouldn't it be exposed to the same conditions as the other areas I mentioned?

There are some patchy grass areas that are holding fish I do not deny that...

It's growing almost everywhere now, but it is strange that some places had good grass in early June are totally bare.

Like I had mentioned in previous posts, time would tell the truth. With the weather conditions the way they are now, and Grass still disappearing to black goop, it would have to be chemicals. So now the question is, what do we as a fishing community need to do and how do we go about doing it? The sad thing is there are so many good areas down there for big fish. I wish TWRA still did the electrofishing each year like they used to and posted the results. It would be interesting to see.

We own lake front property in Meigs County. If you're wanting to get froggy, there is a ton up that way. Passing by Dayton ramp area, that stuff looked ready. And by the way, we had grass about topped out all around our dock and I got rid of it the manly way...about an hour and a half with a heavy rake wading around.. Chemicals? I don't need no stinking chemicals! And after a bit of use from the kids swimming just about every strand was gone.

I am ignorant but have seen what I have seen on the water. Some grass, but also some black goopy shit. My ignorance is in why TVA would kill the grass, what benefit is it to them? Honest question here. I understand around intakes for them and main navigation lanes, but what benefit is it for them to nuke the lake/river?

Why woulda company like aqua services totally kill the grass ? They would loose serious money if they irraticated the grass totally . The black stuff you guys are talking about sounds like the same algae that I snag . Hate to tell you , but it's not dead or dying grass . It's algae . I catch it in certain spots on the lake year round . Even caught it last summer . It's like wet hair and smells like mud .

well to add fuel to the fire.....saw 2 air boats headed up 58 in harrison this morning on the way to work.

the black stuff is a kind of algae as explained above, its a mess to fish around!

Just to be clear... no where in my posts above did I say the black goop was dead grass.... no where did I say it was the result of spraying. I am only saying in areas that HAD grass weeks ago it now has this stuff and in areas that historically has lots of grass there is this black goop, but in other areas I have found thriving grass.

I am no expert and don't even pretend to have more knowledge than anyone else who fishes the lake for sure.

Maybe we have just been invaded by this black goop algae and that effected the grass.

it turns out that black algae can and does compete with other grasses and in certain conditions it can over take other grasses its nasty stuff with no good way of controlling or treating it.

A water test from above the 60 bridge and below the plant would be interesting to see.
I found a couple good lines a few weeks ago in 8-10 fow and wore the fish out. Id pull some up on casts and it was nice and green. Last weekend when I pulled it up it was turning brown and I only caught a few.
I believe I'll make a run up river and see what the grass looks like up there. If there's a night and day difference between up lake and down lake there's no question it's not the weather.
