I just rifled thru the news pages (part of my usual morning ritual). War in Israel, war in Ukraine, war along the China-Burma border, war right here on the streets of the USA. Maybe not with weapons (at least in most cases) but it's just as ugly and hateful as the stuff we see coming from abroad. We've lost our ability to lead with love, to listen to hear, and to disagree without being disrespectful. That's about as close to combat as I've seen in my years.
In spite of all the wickedness and ignorance, a baby rises from the manger to bring the world a promise of hope and passion. The child grows into a man who gives us a living example of how life on this world could be if only we'd try. The man leaves us with a guarantee of forgiveness and acceptance if only we'd let him. Just when we think the world around us is about to implode, explode, or vanish in a flash love comes rushing in to set us back on track. I find it interesting, shameful really, that we set aside only one day out of the year to celebrate this.
We have time to turn this around. We all have a role. It starts right where you are, in your own little corner of the planet. Embrace your family, tell your friends you love them, do a random kind deed for a stranger in need, help the needy, acknowledge honesty and candor, celebrate freedom, say thank-you, take a minute to breathe in and out without fear of having someone watching your every move. Take a second to reflect on what the baby from the manger did to help us sort thru all of the turmoil around us. If you don't know him gimme a shout. I'd love to tell you about him.
Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, and blessed holiday season. Happy birthday, Jesus!
