Harry Truman was a different kind of President.

He probably made as many, or more important decisions

regarding our nation's history as any of the other 42 Presidents preceding him. However, a measure of his greatness may rest

on what he did after he left the White House.

The only asset he had when he died was the house he lived in,

which was in Independence Missouri . His wife had inherited

the house from her mother and father and other than their years

in the White House, they lived their entire lives there.

When he retired from office in 1952, his income was a U.S. Army pension reported to have been $13,507.72 a year. Congress, noting

that he was paying for his stamps and personally licking them,

granted him an 'allowance' and, later, a retroactive pension

of $25,000 per year.

After President Eisenhower was inaugurated, Harry and Bess

drove home to Missouri by themselves. There was no Secret Service following them.

When offered corporate positions at large salaries, he declined, stating, "You don't want me. You want the office of the President, and that doesn't belong to me. It belongs to the American people

and it's not for sale."

Even later, on May 6, 1971, when Congress was preparing to award

him the Medal of Honor on his 87th birthday, he refused to accept it, writing, "I don't consider that I have done anything which should

be the reason for any award, Congressional or otherwise."

As president he paid for all of his own travel expenses and food.

Modern politicians have found a new level of success in cashing

in on the Presidency, resulting in untold wealth. Today, many in Congress also have found a way to become quite wealthy while

enjoying the fruits of their offices. Political offices are now for sale.

(sic. Illinois, Nebraska,LA,FL. etc.etc. )

Good old Harry Truman was correct when he observed,

"My choices in life were either to be a piano player in a whore house

or a politician. And to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference!

I say dig him up and clone him!!

I just recently finished a biography on Truman by David McCullough, who is one of the premier biographers of recent times. It is an excellent read. Truman was an extraordinary President who did what was right by the people, even if it went against his own party line. I think that a lot of his character was rooted in his humble upbringing on a farm and his haberdashery which failed at the beginning of the depression. Harry S never forgot who he was, or from where he came. Politicians today need to take this to heart!

For his time he was quite liberal. A true hero. We (us liberals) have allowed people like Rush and Hannity to take the term "Liberal" and turn it into something other than what it is. Correct definition: Progressive thinking, Looking forward. It was Progressive thinking that brought us things like: Clean water and air, an integrated society, the TVA, Labor laws, employer assisted med insurance, paid vacations, workers comp, family and medical leave, unemployment insurance. the Marshall Plan, the Middle Class, the Internet, FDIC, Social Security, and Medicare, to name just a few. hmmm what has Conservative thinking brought us the last 100 years? The Great Depression, Hooverville, Watergate, The Iraq War, Wall Street collapse. I will give credit to Reagan, He ended the arms race with the Soviet Union.

You will have to forgive them outcaster, they probably did not realize he was a democrat before they pasted it.

Yes, we tend to defend the constitution. As a democratic nation we tend to do so. Republicans tend to shave off the parts they don't like and claim to be champions of it.

You forgot: Wrap themselves in the Flag

The Constitution does not apply to enemy combatants!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially Terrorists!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh and I'm not a Republican. Libertarian remember.

Well you are not a Democrat, as far as being a Libertarian, that usually ends when you get a Reppublican back in.

I would still like to see the list of really good "Conservative Ideas" of the last 100 years..... I'll start you off.... Reagan ending the cold war with help along the way from Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Carter, and Ford. Reagan provided some tax relief in the 80's. Teddy Roosevelt had the vision/idea for our National Parks......... You take it from here.................

I have said it many times but here it goes again. It matters little which of the two parties are in control the road to socialism is just much speedier with the Democrats.

The only idea I like is cutting taxes!!! No outcaster lets get out of the past and talk present. Do you really think this administration has good ideas. I will get you started. 1. Reading Miranda rights to enemy combatants 2. Closing Guantanamo 3. Nation building Afghanistan 4. Taking over our financials 5. Taking over the largest company in the world in GM 6. Taking over our healthcare 7. Forcing people to buy insurance from private companies.

I have said it many times but here it goes again. It matters little which of the two parties are in control the road to socialism is just much speedier with the Democrats.

And every time the Republicans are in charge the Middle Class gets smaller.

Taking over is a big word. Forcing people to be responsible, even you guys Screem to the top of your lungs how people should do so. As far as miranda rights, if in this country yes. Closing Guantanamo yes, because many were not terrorist. How was that different than what Sadam was doing. For someone that does not trust government, hmm, tune changing?

Our enemies should not be brought to our shores when we have a perfectly good place to keep them. If there not terrorist as you say let them go you don't have to close the place down for that. We should do as the Geneva conventions say and shoot terrorists on sight. What about the Nigerian that almost took down the plane Christmas day. Word is he lawyered up and is holding out for a plea bargain. I would bet the rent we let him go in the end. Hope im wrong. Gov't shouldn't force people to buy from a private company. And yes when you own 51% of a company you are majority owner and therefore takeover is appropriate.
