My sweet 90 hp four stroke is shot. WHAAAAAA!

Mechanic said it "leaned" out due to fuel, not sure what that really means though. It does mean the motor needs a total rebuild and that will cost a fortune. Luckily I have my old boat still with the 175 hp Johnson on it Im going to drop on the toon tonight.

Im trying to look on the bright side and think it will make that toon fly, of course, louder, and stinkier but forward without paddling is always better!

I don't know what that means either... but I think I would find out so it doesn't happen again?

I have heard the term used for two strokes, but not fours. A little known fact about two strokes is that if the motor starves for fuel, its also starving lubrication, thus the "lean" term. If you continue to run it, goodbye! Something else I learned the hard way with a two stroke, I put any old two cycle oil in an old motor I had, including chainsaw oil. Big no-no because the outboard is water cooled...never thought about that and it carboned up pretty bad.

A lean condition causes detonation. This is when the fuel ignites before its suppose to and causes excessive heat and pressure in the combustion chamber. A lot of people call this "valve rattle" but it has nothing to do with valves. Usually is caused by a lack of fuel or too low octane. The higher the octane the slower it burns!

The other thing that could have caused it is lack of fuel delivery via the injectors. It doesn't take much grime to slow the spray of an injector. Two strokes, lean could mean either lack of oil or lack of fuel. Either way, it is NOT something you want to hear from the mechanic. Hope you get it up and running soon.

The only good news is that I put my old 175 Johnrude on there last night and it was a screemer! I can run with a TX boat now..., well not that fast but still.
