Peck, you forgot to mention the free car and gas to go back and forth to work, free lunch vouchers at the TVA cafeteria, free heating and cooling unit that they gave you for your home. What kind of free new truck are they giving you for your retirement plus the free Rolexwatch that is mandatory retirement fare for a dedicated employee? Ain't working for the government a hoot?</p>

I guess too bad for all those people who's houses were flooded when they built the dams. So much for private property rights. When politicians figure out that they can manipulate the tax code to gain power and votes say bye bye to a fair and just country.

Let's get rid of the interstate highways too, they took people's property to buid them too, we can always go back to the old 2 lane roads or even the dirt roads with mud holes, I don't like all that traffic noise with semis hauling all that freight that we use every day. Let's protest.

Congrats on retirement. I've got about 15-20 more years of TVA service to go before I can start fishin full time. :)

For some unknown reason the people in these more socialist countries are on average a lot happier than our presciption dependent, nation seems to be. Why all the anti-depresants if this is soooooooo good. All I say is "
Seek first the kingdom of Heaven and all things will be provided unto thee", and stay away from those scripts.

If you think living in a more socialist country will make you happier, what is keeping you here?

TVA is quasi-Federal. Some Federal laws apply, but mostly they run as private entity. However, they do not pay taxes like a private entity and they are allowed to do as they wish (As they are not regulated like a private utility as FERC would put lots more requirements on their reservoirs). I am all for smart regulations, the regulations must balance protection of the citizens (ie the most good for the majority of the people) vs not causing a burden on the industry. The hard part is determine the correct amount of balance.

Everyone should go look up the definition of a Republic which is what the country was founded as not a democracy.

all this talk about big governement reminds me of a few great quotes i read in a Ronald Reagan book once..

'The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.' - Ronald Reagan

'Government is like a baby: An alimentary canal with a big appetite at one end and no sense of responsibility at the other.'
- Ronald Reagan

Mallard, Only the Lord keeps me happy, i'm not saying living here is happiness or living in Holland is happiness. If I had it my way, i'd take my friends and family and move to Jamaica, in a house with no cable and beach access. But I smile every day, right here and with no anti-depresants in me. Hey I'd take one of those nice little houses in downtown (whatever that little town is between Monteagle and Tim's). I find that happiness is attitude, and a gift from God.
Its kinda like fishing, you hear about a type of fishing they are doing in one place, lets take California for example, years ago they started finesse fishing because of the large pop. of people fishing their lakes and because of the clear water. Well you don't have to go to california to finesse fish, you just bring that technique back home to Tennessee.

TW, I respect your opinion and veiws. Cowan is the little town I believe you are talking about. It is wrought with all types of political corruption and possibly more. I don't think you would like it for long. See here is where we differ, I like to throw crankbaits and work them at diffrent speeds, and then maybe throw a big jigging spoon and be aggressive with it. But if I were only allowed to fish with finesse tatics, I would not enjoy it as much. But with the freedoms we have with our current government system I have a choice as to what tatics I want to use. If we as a country travel down the slippery slope of socialism, none of us may have a choice as to how we are ALLOWED to catch fish. And I will admit that I took two Advils this morning as my knee was acting up a little.

I have to with agree with TVA being their own entity now. They get their cake and even get to eat some of it. I have seen it change over the years. On the good hand, It has provided small communities such as the one I live in with better roads, better schools and just a better quality of life for a lot of people. It has also created more farmable land to help with our food demands. Not to mention it has provided us with some beautiful lakes to fish in and a place our families to enjoy. The original platform for Tva was for Providing electricity, jobs, and flood control. Enduring the soup lines and other hardships that my parents and millions of others faced welcomed programs such as TVA with open arms in a time that history proves helped areas in the South to enter into the 20th century. As most everything TVA'S goals have expanded to meet the growing population and higher demand for electricity and also faces very stiff competition from the private sector. I dissagree with some of the direction Tva is headed but I got a pretty good idea what we would be facing with the alternative.

Tyler, I also respect your views. The medicine I have been taking probally saved my life an I am thankful the lord made it available for me to take.

This thread started out as a tongue -in-cheek critique of big govenment (some still don`t get it) and has gone all around the world. Drugs, socialism, patriotism or lack of it, taxes.... you name it`s been covered.

Unless things have changed TVA pays In-Lieu-of Taxes payments to most every county in the watershed probably to the tune of 10`s of Millions $. It also absorbed into it`s budget 70-90 Million of what used to be an annual allocation from the U.S. Congress for thing unrelated to Power Production and River Management about 15 years ago.No more ! Things like community development, recreational facitilties, etc.
Personally I think they have done a pretty good job considering the task they were given in the 1930`s. Have they been perfect...No.... but we all have been reaping the benefits for generations.

We all have the chance to go vote our preference here in a couple of weeks (actually I did mine today)...and if that doesn`t work out for you the way you want...then you can get involved in the politics and try to change things in 2 years or four years down the road.

And if all that fails then you can jump on that Big Government Interstate and go to the nearest airport....or even better get in your boat and head down The Big River to the Gulf of Mexico....and go find yourself someplace else to be Happy!

SNUFFY, when I first read this post a few days ago, I thought of you. I knew you would show. Loved your comments Bro.

Thank you TVA for creating my life long play places.

Heck, I don't want the govt. involved in all we do. I was just trying to say in these times that the USA is going through, we need some different thinking. If all that thought a flat out statement such as "less govt." had been running things in the 30's we wouldn't have TVA. I hope I didn't rile up too many feathers, especially anyone Iget to fish with when the water is cold.

Apparently some still don't get it. I think TVAwas one of the best things ever thought of. Yeah, it was different from anything this country had ever seen. It has been a blessing for this part of the country. I was just throwing off on the "less government" thing. I was trying to say everyone needs an open mind. Nevermind. I do appreciate everyones adult attitude and conversation. I know the mods do too. I also appreciate them and what they do for all us. Let's go fishing.</td></tr></tbody></table>
