Yesterday John was over off Brainard Rd near Hurricane Creek and he saw this from his truck window!!! He said it was the biggest TOM turkey he had ever seen and the girls were nuts about him. The juveniles running around were spurring each other and just having a good ole turkey time. I wish I could have seen them myself .. but he did try to take some pictures. Notice how RED the beard is on the adult male ... no wonder the girls find him irresistable!

TT, that's not the bird's beard. :) That's just part of this throat. The beard is between the breasts on the bird. He's a good looking bird, though. Come turkey season, if he's shot, he should be a trophy.

Why I never have had anybody say that I was irresistable and I have a red beard.

Okay so I did it again. I meant to type gobbler .. as in "look how red his gobbler is"!!! But as usual I was multi-tasking and wasn't fully concentrating on the turkey thread task. :)

Nonetheless .. you all KNOW what I meant! He certainly is a great bird. Cheez ... maybe the girls would find you irresistable if you do something with your tail feathers!!! I'm snicker'n ...

What I can do with my tail feathers is how I got my nickname.emoUpsmile emoUpsmile emoUpsmile

Yep, its getting close! I love chasing the birds! There are several flocks in that area and its always fun to watch the gobblers strut around!

TT- The long red thing that hangs over their beak is known as the snoot. The large red round skin "knots" under their beaks and above their beards is called the carunckles. And of-course the long black hairs found on the breast is the beard.- I have a wealth of useless knowledge!

Didn't you mention something about shooting one years ago in TX?

Making me get the fever.

just another bit of useless turkey knowledge. I believe the strutting bird in the top picture is a real young bird or possibly a jake. The reasoning behind this is jakes have longer middle feathers in the fan while adult gobblers are all approximately the same length.

Good observation BB! That tis a young jake, There must not be an older bird around, or he would get his but flogged for showing off like that!
