For the New Year went to middle TN meat hunting and started off Jan 1st with a big doe early in the morning. Giving her a minute to expire another doe showed up. I figured to put up some extra cube steak, Tloin, sausage and burger in the freezer so, I busted her. As I was dragging the 2nd doe to the truck I saw a decent 8 pt chasing a doe across a feild. Not a thing to do but watch for the ole .06 was in the truck.
After getting back home and getting the two ladies hanging then thinking about it, couldn't stand it and made the trip back on the 2nd day of the new year. I went fairly close where I had seen the buck the day before and set up on the edge of a cedar thicket next to some hardwoods on side of a ridge. At 7:30am I had just got up the tree and getting situated when I heard a stick break to my right in the cedars. I watched and listened then I made out movement just inside the cedars about 20 yards from my stand. Not much light at that time of the morning. The deer disapeared from sight then hit another opening where I could see it with my binoculars and saw horns. It is one of those situations where you have to decide quickly wheather or not to flip the "kill switch" or the opportunity would become just a memory. The deer hit another opening and offered a better look at the rack. I could see 3 pts coming off the left main beam and what at that time appeared to be a split G2 from my angle. The switch flipped and I grabed the gun and the deer hit an opening...BOOM!
I heard him run a short distance but without the sound of CRASH CRASH like a mortally wounded deer does in a thicket running over and through everything. Then silence! As it was getting lighter a doe passed by as I was re-playing what had just happened moments earlier. Another doe appeared and milled around and as she was walking off about 40 yards from me in the direction the buck ran, I watched her stop and then jump and scoot off pretty quick. I stood up and looked with my binoculars and saw what appeared to be a leg.
I climbed down to take a look. Walked over to where the doe jumped and there he was. The buck was a 7 pt. 15" tip to tip. Fairly heavy beamed respectable deer. What I thought was a split G2 was a unique mainbeam that curved around then up with a split. The dog killer was palmated and about 3" long on the left side. The deer dressed 137 lbs.
Now that I have plenty of meat my main focus is getting a "kill" under the belt of my 8 year old grandson. He had missed a 6pt earlier this year....he got excited to say the least. Will let you know how he does.

REMEMBER....Gun Control is being able to hit your target you are shooting!
