Me and a good buddy of mine are planning a trip for my birthday next weekend to a lake we've never been to and decided upon old Hickory lake. Has anyone ever fished that lake in march? Or fished it any at all? Any info would be greatly appreciated

Fished a wild card there a few years ago. I went 20 miles up river from takeoff and found a few fish. Seems like 12 pounds a day was good enough to win. Now this was in November and I list it as one of the worst lakes I have been on.

But it could be a different lake now look at Chickamauga it sure is different now. Not to discourage you from going, everyone has an opinion and you may love it.

That's my fear. We had planned on going to guntersville but after calling around for a motel room we learned of a big tourney outta there the same weekend so we scrapped that game plan. We wanna get away from chick and watts bar for awhile. Any suggestions on a fun place? Keep in mind we are in our mid 20's and haven't covered a lot of places so anywhere is an option haha

I always enjoyed Neely Henry in Gadsden, Al or Pickwick Lake in Florence, Al. March used to be a great time to go to Pickwick and put in at McFarland Park and fish for smallmouth.

The 2010 flood really hurt Old Hickory. I think it is starting to make a comeback. I've had best luck within a few miles up and down river of Flippers. I haven't fished it in several years. They are catching some big Tilapia around the steam plant if the bass aren't biting. Percy Priest is good this time of year for numbers & quality.

some if the biggest stringers of the year come in march on ole hickory small cranks an bubble gum colored flukes in the shallows
the water is very fishable now depending on how much rain we get in the next few days fishing should still be good
pm me for more info I live about 30 min from flippers at ole hickory
an u can call flippers bait store for a local general report they are very nice people

I wanna go. LOL

I lived on Old Hickory for 2 years, and it is a fantastic lake. Your not gonna get the number of fish over 5 lbs. you see on chick but the overall population is good. I lived in Cedar Creek in mount julet, so the area from schutes branch up to the steam plant was where I spent most of my time. Traps and chatterbaits in any of the big creeks around the flats and shallow pockets ought to be good right now. I also did a lot of flipping on the bluffs and up river side of the river islands in the log jams. Now that the water has warmed a bit, the tilapia are no longer hanging around the steam plant. But I would rank in up there with some of my favorite places to fish.

wow, so youre leaving one of the best big bass lakes in the country to go to one of the known worst little bass lakes in the country during primetime prespawn, you'll catch fish but theyre gonna be small. js...............

if youre itching for a place to go away consider lanier(MAGNUM SPOTS) or any of the coosa river impouindments(mean coosa river spots), hartwell is good this time of year. if you want to get the guides rattled on your spinnerbait rod, lake wateree in SC. Lake Murray is pumping out some studs right now. if the water was up i'd say cumberland river/upper barkley(lived there the last 2yrs) flipping the bushes in the backwaters is AWESOME(but the water is down)! basically any where but ole hickory!

Old Hickory is Tuff!! I love fishing Percy Priest! I go fish Priest about 10-15 times a year and love it! Priest seems to be on the upswing. Seems we have been catching better fish and more fish than we used to. One of my favorite areas to fish is west fork up to Fate Sanders. Good luck deciding! When you do decide let us know how you do!

Lanier for spots would be a blast prob get some big rockets too this time of year near flat creek and six mile! Ever think about Barkley or ky lake Kentucky can be rough in the spring if the winds get up.

upper barkley, above dyers creek is just river with backwaters, it really doesnt get bad like the lower end, just have to watch for debri(like i have NEVER seen anywhere else, its amazing) when the water comes up

If I knew what everyone was doing and how they are catchin those big bass I probably wouldn't be looking elsewhere but it seems that I'm cursed on chick. Anytime we try and go it just ends in disaster, to the point where I hate chick. To much boat traffic and so many tourneys every week it's hard to go out and fish with enjoyment. Plus old hickory is on our tourney schedule later in the year so thats the main reason we thought about trying it out.

Thanks for your info churly. It's a stop on our tourney this year and neither of us have ever fished it. Plus with the constant 100+ boat tourneys every weekend on chick it's hard to get out there and enjoy it.

ahhhh, you didnt mention this was as scouting trip for a tourney later in the year. when is the tourney? finished 4th there in the ram open series there 2 yrs ago may be able to help you some.

I'm not positive but I think it's in may. I mean we have plenty of other opportunities to go up there another time but we both wanna see some new scenery haha
