My son was the first first grader placed in the gifted program when it started in Chattanooga Public Schools in 1975. The class was at Normal Park (1st, 2nd, & 3rd grade in same classroom) and I had to provide transportation. It helped him a lot because his Kindergarten Teacher told us he was "retarded" and should be tested so he could get into "Special Ed". HA! He could read the newspaper when he was 4 years old.</p>
