Moved here in June from Minnesota. Have a TROPHY lab that is all trained up for Pheasant. Only problem, no pheasants in TN!!!! SO I was hoping to find a buddy or two here that has a dog that mine can run with and catch on to the quail hunting. I am throwing a canvas with quail scent. Hoping he'll walk right into it... any takers? Also would like my 12 yr old to get a chance to hunt what we always did in Eastern North Carolina. Oh, and I want to shoot some quail!!!! Don't want to overlook that....

Hey NA, I was just about to ask the same question to the fine folks here. I have a Brittany that is a good bird dog, but I can't find any quail here in the midstate. Getting tired of going to the Preserves, although they are better than nothing. If anybody has any land with quail or knows of any, I would love to come and take or go with you hunting and meet some new hunting friends. My dog really needs to hunt, he loves it so much. I hope that some of you would be kind to Nickajack Angler and me.

i hunted quail for most of life until about 10 years ago. i hunted in N alabama on sand mountain mostly. there is just no land to hunt anymore. all the corn feilds are pasture or have trailers on them. it is a sad thing to me. I have a 12 year old German short hair that was as fine a bird dod as there is for the first 2 years of his life. but for the last 10 years he is just a yard dog that kills the occasion squirrel and bird.

I hate it for him. I would love to get him one more chance to bust one last covey before he goes to the great hunting ground. He may not even know how to hunt anymore but i would like to see it.

Back in June there was a front page article in the Times Free Press (Chatt. paper) that said the state population was down 94%! Which was sad to say the least. I hear the locals saying you have to go to Ala. and the preserves. Any good preserves to get my dog acclimated to Quail guys? C'mon.... somebody out there has to want to take a couple of die hard bird hunters.... I'm gonna have to order up some pheasants and start releasing them!!!!! JK....

The Stockbergers Farm in Ringgold can take care of ya. For wild birds i would just schedule some vacation time and head west. You might also try Grouse in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Quail are definitely hard to come by. While in college at MTSU, we used to get into some nice coveys behind my Granny's house but now that land is a neighborhood. Every once in a while you hear one whistle. I have alot of leased land around Spring City that should hold birds, but I haven't seen any there. I do have some grouse on my family land on the plateau, and after deer season I'd be willing to take anyone/dog up there. But, I'm not a bird hunter and I would be following. I know that the coyotes along with land development is the main reason for their disappearance.

Ive always wanted to find suitable land and start a lease area like deer hunters do. Plant a few acres in soy bean and seresa and release a few dozen quail. In a few years I would think that you could populate an area. Although im not sure what the mortality rate would be for birds raised in this manner. Ive looked into raising quail for release and its very restricted and TWRA requires alot of permits. I too hunted most of my life in N Alabama and its sad what has happened to that area and the sport in general. I occasionally hear a bob white here around the house but 15 yrs ago I would hear them daily and even see a covey or two. I too would love to hear of any areas to hunt. The hunting preseres are ok but its still nothing like finding a wild covey.

I too have had bird dogs all my life and I would travel south into GA or Al. My family and I have raised alot of quail in Western Tennessee for hunting but is is not the same. The is a good place in Scotsboro AL that will let you bring your own dog. It should not be hard to find on the internet.
