Question for the boaters

1959 model runabout with a 1959 Mercury 90 horse ( I think ) direct drive motor. If you wanted to go forward, you started it in forward gear, same for reverse. Bought it the day I got out of the Army in 1984 for 200 bucks.

1970 Starcraft, one of the old ones with in line seats and stick steering, with a 50 merc. At the time, I was about the proudest 14 year old around. Been a lot of water under the bridge since then, but this post made me drift back to the 'good ol days'. Thanks.

This has been an interesting post....Not surprising that most started out with a small flatbottom boat of some kind.

1968......16' flatbottom with 10 horses pushing it

1974.......tub/fabulglas 16' with 50

1980.......a knockoff of a hydrosport called Titian with 115 merc

~ 1987.....went with J. Nickols to Knox to the Bullet Boat factory and pulled home the first all metal flake 19 ft bullet and he put a 150 merc on it....It would fly to say the least.....Took me about 4 months to learn how to drive the darn thing. It sure was a puurrrrty thang. sold it in 94.

now I have a flat bottom again and need to reenforce the back and I have a 20 merc....ain't fished from it yet....

My first boat was a 520DVX Ranger! I always wanted a really nice bass rig, but never had 2 nickels to rub together in college. I always said whenever I get a real job and I have a steady decent pay check I'm gonna buy the baddest, best bassrig I can find...and I did. I have a stratos now but I'm probably going back to Ranger. They're just so well built. I want to look at the new Allison XB-21 cause they seem really cool and well built too, but I will probably end up with another Ranger. They're just so easy to operate.

1970 15' Cherokee Tri-Hull, 60 Johnson. (MadBomber caught a bass on the very first cast made from this boat.) Only because I had to tie on a lure while he already had one tied on. LOL I caught a ton of fish from this boat.

1977 16' John boat, 25 hp Evinrude. Only used 2 years.

1996 17' Bass tracker. Love it for a while.

2003 17.5 Pro Crappie Bass Tracker. My favorite of them all. emoGeezer

First and current - 1973 16' Eldocraft bass boat with a 1973 50 horse Evinrude. It is a pitiful thing, BUT I got it for free from my step brother. He bought while living in Orlando and never got to use it, so when he asked if I wanted it, I drove to Orlando and brought it home. After a little tweaking, the old motor runs great. Can't beat the price. emoDance

Great thread! kinda neat seeng how people start out with this and are up to that.

1st - Grandad's 1956 polarkraft 14' flatbottom powered by paddles and eventually upgraded to a trolling motor when i made it to high school and started working
2nd '94 15' alumacraft flatbottom w/25hp johnson (actually dad's, he now owns it again)
now i'm boatless...:(

Hehehe you can't say Ranger and Allison in the same sentence. emoPoke Talk about about apples and oranges. :)

Seriously though. 1st boat was a 196? Sea King V-jon with a trolling motor, 2nd was my dad's 17' G3 with a 70hp hammer (which I had to give back), now I ride in a 2006 19' Kenner bay boat with a 2005 Merc 125hp 2+2 THE biggest POS Merc ever hung on the transom of a boat, it would make a much better anchor than it does an outboard. emoMad
BTW the Merc is appropriately named "Black Betty"

1982 14' v bottom with 18 hp Johnson
1985 Starcraft BV 170 with 60 hp Evinrude
1995 18' Bass Buggy pontoon rigged for bass with 60 hp Merc
1997 17' Hydrasport bass boat with 115 Johnson
2003 Triton 17' Crappie with 40 hp Merc
2005 G3 1860 CC with 90 hp Yamaha

first was 1992 Bass Tracker Tx 17 with 40 Hp (Evinrude?) bought new, kept for ~3 years.
current is 1992 Bass Tracker Pro 17 with 1996 60 HP Evinrude bought last summer. why did I wait so long???

While working part-time at Hartley Marine in 1970, on impluse, I bought a fiberglass v-hull sort of a fishing boat and put my Father-in-law's 56 model 35 Evinrude on it. I got sick and couldn't keep up the payments so my Father-in-law took it over.

A couple years later, I took over my Dad's 1956 14' model FL Alumacraft w/ a '64 9.5 Johnson. He quit fishing. This was a unique boat because it had redwood seats.

In 1990, I replaced the old Johnson with a new electric start 25 Evinrude. (way too much motor for this boat) Neighbor Hal & I caught thousands of fish out of this boat.

In 95, I traded up to a new 175 HydraSport w/150 Evinrude. Still got it and will no doubt use until either I or it gives up!

Even though I enjoy my HydraSport, If I had it to do over, I would keep the 25 Evinrude and trade the Alumacraft for a 17' jon boat. That would better suit my style of fishing.

1st - 1964 Glassmaster runabout & 40 hpJohnson with trolling motor clamped to transom.
2nd - 1977 15.5' Ebbtide with 75 hp Johnson Stinger. Kept this boat for 13 yrs. When my family would go camping & I'd take the wife
for boat ride, we were referred to as the "Cuban Boat People"
3rd - 1989 Bass Cat Pantera 19' with 150 hp Johnson GT. Loved this rig & it was unique. Not many Bass Cats around this area.
4th - 2000 Triton TR-20 with 175 hp Merc. Best fishing boat I've ever been in.

1. 1995 Bass Tracker ProTeam18 w/ 75 HP Mariner.... I loved that boat, sold it to my grandpa.
2. 2000 Davo's 2000 Stratos Vindicator w/ 150 HP Johnsn.... I am in love with the boat, it fishes a LOT bigger than a 17' boat, and it flies... great purchase for me.

How about a 1956 Alumnacraft V-hull. 12 ft long with a 18 hp Johnson. This thing had a tiller handle, Fast idle, Slow idle, and Choke for the nobs. You had to steer with one hand and hold the fast idle out with the other. I did however have marine grade plywood with green outdoor carpet built up for a platform in the front. Minn Kota TM with hand control, and a humming bird fish finder the that never did work right. It was always fun though, had some good times in that one.

1957 Alumnacraft 18 hp Johnson
1993 Tracker 17 60 hp Merc
1995 Tracker 18 90 hp Merc
1993 Stratos 285 150 Johnson
1998 Triton TR-20 200 Johnson
1998 Javelin 400B 200 Johnson
1997 Ranger 492VS 175 Johnson
2000 Ranger R93VS 200 Johnson
2001 Ranger 518 XVS 200 Merc
2007 Triton TR-196 200 Merc

Maybe I should be in the boat business??????

You forgot the rubber ducky that you bathe with nightly. You taught that thing to wax your back yet? Bwwaaahhhhhaaaaaaaa ;)

My first was an no name 14' flat bottom boat made in late 40's or early 50's

The motor was a 7 1/2 hp Elgin.

No trailer of course; tied it on top of the car and put the motor in the trunk.

When I couldn't get parts for the Elgin any more I bought an old Johnson 10 hp. Thought I was really up town then!
