Great story Richard, brings back memories of hunts years ago. Most hunters have about the same story to tell if you could get them to tell em.

Good reading Richard...thanks for sharing.

A few of my stupid mistakes....

Went to sleep in a tree stand while bowhunting....was not strapped in....woke up in a start and jumped out...luckily I was young, agile and only 10 feet up.

Got up on a mountain an hour walk from camp and realized my ammo was back at camp. Went back to camp and crawled back into my sleeping bag. I needed the rest to help my friends haul out their deer.

I picked up a squirrel that I "thought" was dead. Them suckers are easier to catch than let go of.

Thanks for sharing that one, it gave me a good laugh. It also brings back the best ah...worst one I did that still haunts me today.

I was hunting the lower AR bottoms with a crossbow and had seen a huge buck with a rack that dreams are made of. It was when crossbows were first legal and I was not all that use to them yet. I hunted that big boy for a couple weeks or better when my efforst finally paid off. The buck was running in an area I had a stand build to gun hunt out of...you know the kind with a roof and seat so that the weather doesn't effect you. I will not bore you all with the tracking, planning and all that went into that eventful morning but after two weeks it was a long hunt for that one deer.
The big boy came out of some thick underbrush only about 25 yards from me and presented a picture postcard broadside shot. He had no idea I was anywhere around. The deer had a perfect 10 point heavy beam rack and I was planning to hang it on my wall. He looked huge standing there in the gas line I was set up on and slowly I raised my crossbow, clicked off the safety and steadied my aim. All those evening practising and making sure I knew the distance and where to aim was about to pay off. Come on I thought don't move, thank you Lord....BAME! Crossbow sounding and I found myself getting knocked out going to the ground all at the same time. Yep...I was dazed and sitting on the floor of the stand not having any idea what had just happened. My jaw was killing me and it was bleeding slightly from the corner of my mouth. Trying to clear the stars from my mind I realized upon getting to my feet that the roof was being held up by four posts. When I pulled the trigger the right arm of the crossbow came in contact with the post that was only a inch away. All 75 lbs of force hit that post and caused the butt of the bow to hit my lower right jaw knocking my out and down for a split moment. I never knew what happened to that deer or my arrow where ever it ended up going. I can still see that big boy standing there when I think about it.emoRolleyes Jmax
