Two Engineers + One Idea = 6 Hours of Pain

I have seen many sludged engines get denied. It is NOT the dealerships call but the Distric manager from Chyrsler. When we have one that is questionalble then we have to get him involed. When I say sludged, I mean alot of sludge. All engines will build some sludge up reguardless, But if it has a 1/2 of sludge built up in the valve covers or oil pan, then that when they get Chyrsler involved. If it is a sludged engine that gets covered we have to include the info that they give us when we return it to Chyrsler. We have had people drive them so long that ALL the oil has become solid, and makes a nice black gello. Alot of it goes with driving habbits. You drive long distances and the moisture gets "burned out" and the oil does last longer. It is bad for many short trips on one. The engine sweats and he exhaust sweats. The exhaust rusts from the inside out.

I got my oil changed Thursday at Prebul for $20.25 with a coupon. When I worked there it cost me $16. I have the 16 plug 4.7L that just came out in 08, and I couln't buy 6 QTS of good oil for that price. I get coupons all the time. Did you buy from Prebul?

That site is selling you a sampling kits and oil test. They were detecting things likeanti-freeze in the oil. That is a mechanical issue. They cost $22.50 and would cost more than a oil change on most vehicles. If it was like a cross fire that has a $125 oil change that would be great. I will not argue the fact that oil does last longer 3K, But there is certain driving habits that would change when you change oil. It was the statement that changing you oil will damage the engine that I wanted to see. That is why there is a Schedule A and B. They are for different habbits. I have seen them drop in 08 the 15K diff services and I built hundreds of rear diffs with trac-loks from the lack of fluid change. The friction modifier breaks down and the clutches chatter, then the clips break and fills the case full of metal where the clips rub the housing. Now they don't want you to service them. You stated that your oil change monitor as high as 8K and as low as 2K and it is doing that off your driving habits. With the 2K you did alot of short non-drive cycles. A drive cycles is when a pcm will see alot of different driving conditions, speeds, rpms, ect. Doesn't mean you didn't drive it. I will have to do some research or call Chrysler when I get a chance. I see it written that it was 2500-3500 somewhere. It may have been on another model. 8K sounds high to me for the highest the manual wants is 6k. But Chryslerchanges so much between years and makes of the same year now wonder I had to go to training 20 or more times a year!!!! It may be normal for a 8K.

dont sweat it wrenchin, i trust your opinion. i was just presenting an alternate way of looking at it that has worked for me in the past.
keep up the informative posts.
thanks soggysod

No problem! Will have a thread on Taz's 60* sometime next week with pics of the rebuild and mods. Got a 2.5 merc going on also, will have to post pics on the modifications of it. Later

Those who dont read manuals first are the same people I know who dont pay for Insurance on anything ... an old friend once to me that manuals and insurance are only for those who cant afford to just pay to have it fixed if they break it or break some ones car!

Since that has never applied to me .. I read manuals and pay for the insurance.. I generally study every thing to death b4 I even attempt a project .

I don't know about yammies. You may call a dealer and ask. Some manufactures put thing like that in the owners manual and some don't.

It has to fill the block up first. Most mercs don't pee untill they reach 143* or the poppet opens. I am not familiar with the Opti as I don't work on them. If it pees that quick it may have a thermostat hung open, once again not familiar with them. Are you raising the rpms when you start it??? That will ususally induce peeing on a merc even when not at 143*.

I am not reving it up. I thought it should start peeing right away.

On a OMC because the way it is ran, it is more of a bleeder. On a merc v-6 2.0, 2.4, and 2.5 it is dumped after the t-stats and HOT water versus COLD water on a OMC. Look me look at something for you.

I looked up your 200 opti is a 3.0L DFI (direct fuel injection) and it pees differently from the other v-6's. Here is a page out of the mercury opti manual for 2000 describing the cooling system and how it pees.It should pee very quickly, but it has to fill the block up first.

Thanks Wrechin! I have one more question. After I run for a little while at about full throttle, when I sit it down in the water and put it in neutral it seems to idle a good bit higher than it normally does. After a few seconds it idles on down, but if I were to put it right back in gear with it idling that high it slams in, so I always wait til the idle goes down. Is this normal? I am not that worried b/c it is still warrantied, but would still like to know. emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks emoThanks

I couln't tell ya. It may be a cooling condition for the compressor to idle high, similar to a turbo on a car where you need to let it idle for 30 seconds berfore cutting it off. Just my GUESS. Does it idle high for the about the same amount of time???

It idles high for about 15 seconds each time and then idles down, nut does not do it unless ran pretty hard.

I will do that! The dealer I use usually cannot talk much. It seems like you have to make an appointment to talk to them on the phone. When I speak to them I will let you know.
