So this is not a lesson on how to paint lures, as I am bad, but me showing how I have done it and some of you who know how, maybe giving me pointers. The first one I ever did is the blue, white, orange rattle trap. Just some old one I found that I had, it was plain white to begin with. Then I tried a jerk bait, looks like complete doo doo, I redid it. Third is the small shallow crank bait I am holding, it turned out pretty well. Then I just did an XR 50 and redid the doo doo jerk bait. I have shown all the steps I took to paint these lures, so you all who know more than me, give me a hint or two. I do not have any of the scale masking tape, so I was just using porch screen for my scales. The clear coat is two part epoxy. So the steps are as follows; sand and primer, silver, white, yellow, blue, clear. Hope you enjoy and we all learn something. Also, I plan on using this XR-50 to beat Jmax and Wiskers in at least 1 tournament this year. On the Xr-50, the epoxy stuck to the clamps and took some paint off with it, thats what the missing paint is on the end. Also, on the redo of the jerk paint, I mixed a tiny bit of yellow with the clear and it became too yellow, put it on anyways and then decided I did not like it, so I tried to removed while it was setting, then recoated with clear, that is why it is so lumpy and miscolored.

tyler, I don't think they look that bad for you just beginning. Did you use an air brush? Maybe turn the screen so it would give a diamond pattern. I would like to try and do that myself one day!

Looks good to me Tyler! What kind of spray or air brush? Where did you get it? How much do it cost? I would like to look into some of this. My wife and daughters have a "tanning" spray gun, but I think I'd better not bother it ... just yet, but I'm thinking!?

nice looking job tyler, I'm very impressed, my first go around didn't look that good by any means, I'd chunk that trap out in the water for sure.

I just imagined you forgetting chartruse in the tanning sprayer.

Tyler those look giod bud!! Give me a shout sometime I build a balsa flatside and have since I was about 12 and by the way guys harbor freight has airbrushes very reasoanable. They are built just like a badger brand brush which is pretty much the best

I used an airbrush I had from when I was younger. It was a good one back then, a vega I think is the name. You need a gun that has down for air and back for paint, so you can regulate both. I also used a tiny side cup for it. I would only have to put about 10 drops of paint in for each color. Need to find a place to get createx (sp) paint. I have some that I had from 14 years ago and it still sprays, imagine that. The silver and chartuese I got at hobby lobby. They are washable paints, but I think that with the epoxy over it they should be alright, i will just have to wait and see I guess. But would rather use good paint.

They look good Tyler....... You'll get better with time. Each lure and every technique learned will challenge your skills.

3 things to ponder.

1) Pretty lures catch the fishermen as well as the fish

2) All pros start out as rookies

3) Rome wasn't built in a day.

Using powdered paint or dipping paint I have found works best for jig heads or any hard baits. Many spray paint crankbaits but if you are like me the older you get the more you shake, heck it is hard for me to hold screwdriver steady. Kevin van dam supposedly paints some of his crankbaits and jerkbaits. Everyone has there reliable colors that they believe helps them catch fish. My favorite jig colors are black and blue.

Tyler, all those baits look good, I fish don't know they are lumpy or not when it is moving, I don't see anything wrong with them except they don't have hooks. emoLaugh

Micheals craft store is a good source for paint. Material thickness and air pressure (and practice) are the keys. What did you use for the clear coat? How much is importance because you can literally ruin the action. I have had quite a few great looking jobs that were bricks in the water! I also will add if you go to the beads and dauber part of Michaels, there is usually some fine glitter and foil. Tackleundergound is the best source for what you are doing..

Forgot something; I learned a very important thing about water based paints, brass, copper and water softened by salt. It will corrode the airbrush. Don't leave water in the airbrush unless you can gurantee it's mineral free. My airbrush literally fell apart where you thought it was all one piece. I tried soldering or brazing it back together with no sucess. Badger actually replaced the whole thing for free when I asked them how I could fix it so I will never buy another airbrush and owe them this little kick...it was over 3 years old!

I used two part epoxy for the clear coat, so thinking about it, the thickness of the clear coat might actually kill the action. What is best?
