Honestly, I didn't know the clear coat created the thickness, I always thought it was the paint... Most of the time you have to double dip it, so the paint dosen't fade....

Tyler you can even out the lumpy clear coat with a hair drier before the clear coat sets up . Don't get it too hot or it will run like water . Are you using a drying wheel ? Also be careful with the jerk baits . Too much clear coat and they will sink like a rock . And the smaller the lures the more the weight of the clear coat will affect the action . You can thin the clear coat with denature alcohol . For some cheap scale material go to Wal-mart and get some of the wedding dress lace .

something else that works well for painting scales is those nylon shower sponge things. just cut the string holding it together and you'll have enough to last for a long time. stretches really nice to make diamond patterns too.

Powder paint I will coat it on and stick it in the oven... If I'm dipping jig heads I will have rack available so I can let the jig heads dry.... Use a little bit of paint thinner, so the paint dosen't get too thick... I always use two coats.....

NEver heard of a drying wheel. I guess it spins it to even the coat and maybe even sling off the extra. Thanks for all the feed back, ready to try another one now.

A drying wheel is a must to get the clear coat smooth and even and they are easy to make . Go to Tackleunderground.com and you can get plans to make one .
