I was fishing Watts Bar, well rather hanging on to my front seat in 2 feet waves. I was over some brush and heard splashes behind me and didn't think nothing, probably was a few gees or duck. All of a sudden a DEER goes swimming by. This little fella had to have swam almost a 1/2 mile across the opening of Whites Creek. I stopped fishing and put my trolling motor on high and followed it from a about 50 yards away for the last 400 yards. He did make it to someones back yard and attempted to jump over a wall. He fell but got over the wall a second time and ran away. Unbelievable! I was going to snap a photo but was more concerned about attempting a rescue it if started to go under. Hope he is sitting nice and warm in some pine boughs now.

Fuz,..I had the same thing happen on Douglas late one year and they (2) probably swam a mile. I follwed them like you did and they tried to climb out on a shale bluff. They get up about 20 feet and then fall back in the water. After the second fall I got close enough to steer them down the bank to a shallower exit. I doubt they could have gone 5 more minutes.
Hunger and/or pressure make `em do crazy things.

fuzzy, i have been fishing at n/j and seen them swim from old 41 hwy area to the islands around bennet lake area. deer are very vesitile in all aspects of survivel. glad you got to witness this and the deer is fine. emoParty emoThumbsup

I've seen it a few times on Lake Gaston in NC and Butner near Raleigh growing up. We tried to get one in the boat as kids. Got its front feet over the side and it almost kicked our butts!!!! Slashing with it's front paws. We thought it was going to drown. She swam off and made it to shore.
Back in December, around Christmas Pumpy and I saw a deer swimming across the river to Burns Island below Nick Dam. My son asked how they can swim with feet like that. I told him because they run like a deer. It's a cool experience. Glad you got to see that. I think it's pretty much part of their habitat. And if a dog can go get ducks all day in freezing temps and water, then why wouldn't a deer? Their coats have oil that keeps them repels a bit of water, I would imagine...

I have seen a deer swim across the lake but not that far!WOW

Do not ever I mean ever try to get a LIVE deer in your boat...............They will win the battle. A live deer is a mean son of a gun.

Excellent advise from malerdecho! The deer will absolutly win. Deer can swim for miles at a time and their fur can resist the water and temps. I wouldn't worry too much about the little guy as their coat of fur has oils in it that will help keep it afloat. </p>

On another note, sounds like the bear that swam by the wife and I at Parksville lake. It had swam about 1/2 a mile and was coming for the boat when she saw it. I think ti was getting tired and wanted a ride. I finally got far enough away from it and grabbed the camera.

If you had survived thousands of years from predation and winters without shelter you would be tough enough to cross 1/2 mile of 46 degree water.
Being at the top of the food chain and having opposable thumbs are making humans soft.

saw a squirrel swim about 1/4 mile on wattts bar

I saw a squirrel get attacked by a bass while he swimming across the pond. Sadly the bass was only about 4lbs and there was no way he could have eaten that squirrel. gave him( the squirrel) a hell of a scare though!!!emoLaugh

I was in Canada fishing years ago, and saw a pike pick off two baby Loons swimming through the reeds.

I was at Dagwoods one time & saw a real live Redneck get sucker punched in the back of the head with a pool stick!

The bear pics rock... that's really cool and would have made my heart jump had I seen him headed toward my boat.
Yeah, I was about 14 or 15 when we tried to get that deer in the boat. Immediately knew it was a bad idea... And now, reading and learning more about them, people get killed by their OWN deer!!!! They can get pretty vicious. Glad most that I've seen, I was standing over about to gut.
