rsimms - 8/11/2008 11:52 AM I'm not really married to any particular brand. But Abu Garcia Ambassadors have proved very long-lasting and reliable for me. And I've more recently become a fan of Okuma's as well.

I strongly agree- I've had an Abu Garcia Ambassador5000c since mid 70's, caught a ton of fish, never failed me and never needed repair until just now- need new drag washers.

I'm sure there are other great reel makers but as they say, "if it ain't broke don't fix it"

you have to know what ratio you want before you buy one.i love my 4500 5000 5500 ambassador.but if you you want a fast reel that is not so heavy i could not tell you.im still looking for that one.if you have small hands the ambassador is not for you.but they are great reels if you keep them oiled.

Are parts available for changing gear ratio on the old 5000c ?

Seems like there used to be.

I use mine mostly for bait fishing but sometimes will flip worms with it.

I'd tell you what my favorite is, but it's too much work to scrape the slime and scales off of it to find out! Actually, Okuma for heavier spinning and casting reels, Shimano Cardiff for lighter casting, and Shimano and Pfluger president for lighter spinning.
