I have a 89 18ft astroglass what do yall think the boat trailer and motor would wiegh ?
I have a 4cyl toyaota rav 4 2wd car with a 1200 lb tow capacity it tows it around the yard just fine .. do you think it would handle it on the road and out of the ramp ?

You can get your boat weight from NADA boat value guide, don't forget to add the weight of your motor and any additional gear (batteries, gas, etc).

I would think that with that size glass boat you will be well over 1200 lbs.

Thanx for the nada idea .. it list the boat at 1200 lbs, motor at lil less than 400 , my towing capacity is 1500 not 1200 its still lil over the 1500 lbs ( 1200+381 = 1581 without gas and batteries ) , but as long as I can get it out of the ramp, its a whole lot better than using the old gas hog van of mine!
That thing gets maybe 8 mph. at least untill I can get a small used truck something with a 2500 -3300 lb towing capacity.
We will find out today at riverpark if I can get out of the ramp emoLaugh emoScratch emoEek emoDoh I just so excited to go fishing again .. I havent been in a long time . last time I tried my ol van broke down at the ramp emoBang

NRG- Getting to the Lake is no problem with almost anything. I saw a guy pulling a looked to be 18-19 Ft Pro Craft with a VW Rabbit one time..I thought, I bet that thing wouldnt stop in a Ten acre field. So towing is half the task.STOPPING is the other half...and most likely the really more important...So for safety purposes, Be very alert with your Rav4 and really start slowing well in advance...I'm sure you have thought of this aswell ,but Just a thought for your safety...

I also suggest you to head skeeterzx200 advice, STOPing is the hard part. rolling along is no problem.

NRG,

Be very, very, very careful ---- ProCraft boats are known to be well made, but heavy hulls, so I'd think your hull is going to be around 1300 to 1400 lbs, add around 400 lbs for a 150 outboard you get to 1700 - 1800 and you haven't even taken into account fuel, batteries, tackle, and as has been pointed out a trailer. You will be way over weight for a Rav 4 and you run the risk of not only causing an accident, but causing harm to the running gear of your tow vehicle. In addition, in the event of an accident a clever lawyer could use the fact that you are towing more than the legal limit of your vehicle to make you look real bad in court! Just my .02 cents worth, but I'd hate to see a friend and fellow CFF member get hurt or get in trouble.

All went well almost didnt know it was back there .. stopped good, and pulled out of the ramp better than my lighter 15 ft boat did. I took it to a scale this afternoon and wieghed it it was 1610 lbs with all my gear close enuff to 1500 for me !

be real careful especially when coming to a stop......the short wheel base of the rav 4 and the length of the boat is about twice that...it can be big lever if the rav ever gets a little cockeyed in a panic stop...just be real careful there Big

Let me add one more warning and I absolutely agree with Skeeter's post. With that small vehicle the stopping is going to be a problem.

If you are running on wet roads and either go around a fast curve, hit your brakes or even if the wind is blowing hard you can Jack-knife and your boat will push you sideways and off the road. On Dry roads you should be okay. I would try to avoid trying to drive over 55 MPH if you have an automatic transmission.

I had a Vision (Vision Boat, not a daydream) about that size and loaded with motor and trailer I think that you are going to be pulling approximately 2100 - 2200 lbs.

Its a stick 5 speed, and I understand what yall are saying trust me Id rather pull it with bigger vehicle but for the couple times a month I get to go to chester frost or the river park Ill be ok. At least until I can get another tow vehicle. The trailer is only rated for 2000 lbs so I knew it couldnt wiegh more than that, certified scale puts it at 1610 lbs

When I got my 18 ft Hydra Sport in 95, I towed it with a 2.8 liter V6 S-10 chevy. I figure boat, motor, trailer, and gear came to around 2000 lbs. The S-10 did have an automatic transmission which is a must when pulling up a ramp. I never had any problem with pulling. Stopping was an adventure, especially on a wet road! Even my Dodge Dakota has problems sometimes stopping unless I plan ahead. I wish I had an old model full size pickup with towing package brakes. Tires can also be a problem. long before tires get a lot of tread wear, the rubber compound gets harder. This also affects stopping power on wet roads.

Short wheelbase, heavy boat, older tires, light weight towing vehicle is a recipe for disaster!!!!

What fun is an automatic transmission. I enjoy pulling my TR-19 up the ramp with 4.3L V6 5 Speed Transmission. You just have to learn the 'pop the parking brake' trick and its a breeze.

As everyone mentioned above, its not the pulling I would be worried about, it would be the stopping & the ice this time of year. Good luck. carl

tritoncarl's truck is indeed fun to pull out of a ramp. i tried to use all 3 pedals at once with 2 feet 'til he taught me the e-brake method... no sweat. frost you moving to huntsville yet?emoPoke
