I am not going to read all the threads. I am just going to say that there is a law of unintended consequences. For example, Lyndon Johnson's great society was supposed to end poverty - "War on poverty" amd we have more poverty than ever and more government help to those that are impoverished than ever. Yet our poor live like kings compared to the rest of the world (Just go visit Mexico City, Sao Paulo Brazil or a host of other countries). The feds have taken over schools and curriculum - No Child Left Behind and a host of other programs yet our children learn less and less practical skills and more and more about social issues and in fact there is not a public school in the country that really has control over much any more. Have you ever sat through a full day of public school with your kids? You would be surprised how much time is wasted and how little time is spent on actual subject matter like reading writing and arithmatic. Law of unintended consequences, No Child Left Behind just piled up a bunch of forms the administrators have to fill out to keep federal funding. Then there is the green movement and carbon emissions movements. Do you like putting ethanol in your boat? I don't! Did you know ethanol costs more to produce than they can sell it for and the feds subsidize it and that is what makes it economically efficient to produce? Did you know ethanol takes more energy to produce and costs precious water in the production process? It also results in less gas mileage. Well that is where the law of unintended consequences comes together and meets the law of good intentions. If you have read this far then now think about this.... the government is going to regulate the entire health care system, the IRS is going to hire 16000 agents to enforce it and although Medicare is a trainwreck in terms of fraud and costs, somehow this plan is going to reduce costs and make everyone healthier. If you have ever hired someone to do a job you look at their resume and past record and make a hiring decision based on a track record and past success. When I look at a lot of government programs I do not see a successful track record or past success. I guess when climate change law passes and no one can afford bass boats or fuel because of carbon taxes then the people of this country will unite and realize their liberties are being traded away for a promise and some cash. As for me, I still like watching Braveheart and yelling FREEDOM!! at the very end of the movie. Let us not devalue individual liberty for the price of a doctor's visit. May God Bless America and Bless all my fisherman colleagues Democrat Independent Liberterian Conservative and Republican -- Tight Lines and hoping we will never have to surrender our bass boats or the great sport of fishing or hunting! I started working out in the "real world" when I was 15 yrs old. I paid into social security till I became disabled and unable to work. Once I started recieving disability benifits, the gov required me to get medicare which I pay for every month. I also have private healthcare through my wifes employment. Yes, the private does cost more, but the coverage is much better. I am thankful for having both because after the private pays out what it covers, then medicare usually pays for the rest in most cases.

When I was 20, I passed out from heat exhaustion and I got put in the hospital. The only problem was, I had just started a new job and had no insurance. The bill was over $4500. I made payments for 5 yrs and paid it off. Some times I could only pay $50 a month, but I did pay it off. If you show intent to pay and stay in contact with them, they will work with you. Its not fun, and you may have to spend some time on the phone, but they have to work with you if they want to get paid! They even wrote off some parts of the bills that I owed. The other day I had a problem and needed an MRI and MRA as soon as possible. I got into the doctor that day and had the tests the next day. It save me from having to go to the ER. I doubt once the whole heathcare thing kicks in In 2014 or when ever it is, It wont be that easy!

The system we have now needed some attention and work done, but not a complete overhaul! I think the government will take charge of the private companies just like they have done with the banking system and General Motors.

Well, your bunch can keep throwing ankors, I am going to throw ropes, because that class of people are drowning. My opinion, have not forgot where I come from, trying not to leave them behind.

The overwhelming majority of the small percentage of Americans actually NEEDING this should have stayed out of the water if they could not swim.

Good question BBass. I just pulled this from an article I read:

Most Americans would now be required to buy insurance, or face penalties if they refused.

Crack heads and those on welfare are probably not "most Americans". So I suspect, but do not know for sure, that they will still get a free ride and use the ER for their pain pill fixes. And "most Americans" will have to foot the bill for the continuing rising costs of doctor visits, hospitilizations, drugs, and health insurance premiums.

Those on welfare just cannot afford health insurance because of the high prices of tobacco, alcohol, cell phones, gas, and cable tv. So, somebody must pay for it.

Yep...shows like intervention don't help one bit either. The addition is a disease now a-days. Its wrong yet people just cant help it. In reading all the gripes about the age a grown parent can carry their kid on insurance and PAY for it seems little to none if this is the case for such people.

Amen Brother! Lest we forget from 1994 until 2006 the Republican's were in control of both houses of congress. Just exactly what did they do to reign in Federal spending? NOT ONE DAMN THING, that's what they did. In fact they expaned the Federal government bigger and faster than ANY congress in history. Conservatives, what a crock! The Republicans are no better than the Democrats, they only want to piss our money away on different stuff than the Democrats do. Either way BOTH parties have shown they CANNOT stop spending our money, mostly for things that benefit themselves, not the taxpayers.

Trust me, the more uninsurable and high risk people the insurance industry is forced to cover by the government the higher the premium for everyone. It does not matter if it is health, disability, life, auto, home, boat, or whatever insurance.

I wonder how many people who complain about the insurance companies have actually committed insurance fraud (which is a big factor of premiums)

Insurance fraud occurs every day, and in every state. People of all races, incomes and ages are victimized. Insurance schemes steal at least $80 billion a year, the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimates.

Examples:
Insurance fraud happens when people deceive an insurance company to collect money to which they aren’t entitled. Padding a burglary claim or lying about where you register your car to lower your auto premiums are two examples of smaller “soft” fraud. Burning down your home for insurance money or taking part in staged accidents are examples of “hard” fraud.

One of the bigger frauds is having a fender bender and working something out with the body shop on adding the deductible in the cost of repair so the insured is really not out any money.

Staying at home after you have really been healed is another.

saying an injury you received at home or while playing sports was work-related so you could collect workers comp coverage.

Every person in the U.S. has free medical care( regardless if they can afford it or not or have citizenship). This is the reason for the long wait in the ER. Example: If you have no insurance but would like to have a thorough exam on your heart, go to the ER, tell them you are having chest pains. The ER will run every test available give you the results, send you a bill but they can not make you pay. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE NOW!!

As for people that can afford insurance but use the ER for all medical conditions at no cost to them (20% of the uninsured population) will be required to pay or have it taken from income tax.
