This has been an interesting topic, my opinion hasn't changed at all..... The COE lakes Lanier, Allatoona, and Carters water levels have been mismanaged this year, bottom line. Especially Lanier, it's obvious just by doing research that the COE released to much water for most of the year. The Gov ordered it, doesn't matter they are still be responsible. People may be unfairly blaming the COE when in reality they're just doing their job, but I work w/ the Magistrate Courts and people get mad at me for doing my job everyday. Thats life. There is NO denying that Lanier wouldn't be down 20 ft if not for the Corp.....

Now having said that here is a Carters update..... I spoke w/ Lou Ann Lackey (Carters Park Mgr COE) she says that they are planning to pour ramps this week at the Woodring Branch facility so we should be back in the water sometime in the coming weeks. Good sign.

Jimmy, walk into my COE office and you will see nothing.  Because we are all on the road 3 weeks a month building $250M of Army Training Ranges each year.  We love our jobs, we love working for the soldiers and your blatent trashing of the Corps of Engineers is slanderous and uncalled for.  I know you have served our country and I have thanked you many times here on CFF to that... but you are not around the COE offices 8 hours a day seeing exactly what they are doing.  As you know from your service, middle of the line workers can't just go out and fix a dock or a ramp.  You have to have funding and direction from a supervisor or superior.  I am sure most of them Park employees would love to be busy fixing what you think needs fixing, but a lot of times government beaucracy way above our paygrades, keep us from doing our job.

It's hard to look at the big picture, but to deny the fact that the lack of rain is not the primary cause is perplexing. Ok, so the COE isn't managing the reservoir as well as it should, I'll buy that. So why was it that the reservoir has been much fuller when we've had lots of rain, all while the COE was so badly mis-managing the reservoir?

The COE, with our tax dollars, built the dam which made the reservoir - would we have been better off without the dam? We wouldn't have any water during a record drought year like this - the rivers would be a trickle without the storage capacity of the reservoirs.

This year was also one of the hottest ever on record. With that goes record power demands, as we all like to have our air conditioners running to keep our homes and businesses cool. WE are the ones that are demanding this additional power. All the water that is "released" during these times goes through the turbines which turn the generators which make power for us to consume because WE demand it.

Many millions of dollars worth of homes, businesses, and property are in the floodplain of the river. Without a dam such as this, every time we got a large amount of rain in a short time period flooding and property loss would occur.

This has been a great thread, lots of great viewpoints. Again, no disrespect to anyone. I'm out on this one...

Brandon you are correct I am not around your office and I apoligize to all on here for offending anyone. I am however speaking of the COE building here on Pond Lanier. There are great people in the COE and to slam them all is like saying that all the Army is the same. I have been with Ranger units most of my 18 years so to say that I am the ame as the army is slanderous. I do apoligize to you personaaly Brandon and on here vs. a PM where it was an apology between you and I. I still do not care what anyone says the COE is not managing Lake Lanier to the best of its abilities. The ranger way of life is you should always do whatever you do to the best of your ability. Wheather it is take out the trash, take down an objective, love your wife, play with your kids. what ever the task you should always do it to the best of your abilities and be able to look in the mirro and say you know what I gave it my all and no one can ever ask more.........So once again to you Brandon and all who give 110% every day I apologize. To you lazy ones get off you butts and do your job what ever it may be. Whether it is earning your living providing for your family or making dinner give your best everyday!!!!!!!!!!! Rangers Lead the Way!!!

I have been enlightened by all the information/opinions on this thread. Kevin and I have had very little understanding of the reasons behind the raising and lowering of reservior waters. We DO understand drought, but not much else. It's much more complex a process than I realized.

I must say though BPrice, what a profound statement:

"I am sure most of them Park employees would love to be busy fixing what you think needs fixing, but a lot of times government beaucracy way above our paygrades, keep us from doing our job."

This covers just about any work situation anywhereemoCool

Jimmy, no offense taken, just caught me at the wrong moment :)  I know you are passionate about this and I understand.  You are right, Rangers do lead the way!
