They said there was not law stating where they can or can't string their nets. One of them told me that they are supposed to run them deep enough to where boats can safely pass over them, but there was nothing that they could do about it. Cost me a new water pump, but I probably destroyed a 50 yards of his net cutting it out of the prop so I guess we got even.

I don't understand ? They are suppose to to run their nets deep enough to where boats can safely pass over them...but nothing TWRA can do about it if they don't ? It seems like if a net is seen stretched out on top of the water where a boat prop can get entangled in it their should be some sort of fine or something ? Already enough hazards on the water but no one cares about a net getting all wound up in someone's prop ? You usually can't see these nets until it's too late if they are shallow -- like this one.

My thoughts exactly. TWRA seemed totally uninterested when I told them about it.

I bet if they had to pay a re stocking fee for all the bass they kill they wouldn’t put them in the mouths of spawning areas this time of year if they had that many dead bass wouldn’t that count as over the limit????! I find it hard to believe TWRA is not interested in this

Suggestion, We need twra to stock 10 stripers a year in chick. Then they would have to ban the gill nets like they did on other lakes with stripers!

I am going to say, more than likely if you left a note on the gill net stating that you got your prop into it and it messed up your pump or propeller very nicely, the guy who owns it would read the note when he runs the line and send you a check for the damage. I am sure they are very sorry about it.ok.. sorry... couldn't resist the sarcasm.Greg

They already stock striped bass.. 76,912 to be exact last year per their website.

Imk25,
can only commercial fisherman turn in fish for money? just curious. i fish a lot for catfish (rod and reel) and figure if i can earn a few extra $$ while having fun catching them, maybe look into it? as for gill nets, those things should be outlawed or limit on length, time and place they are put!! thanks in advance~!

That’s why I said that the gill net guys should have a fine to re stock for every bass they kill

If they are bringing $8-10/ pound as mentioned here, I'll go catch some too! lol

Hell I caught 3 over 10 lbs on a rattle trap last weekend, I should have kept and sold em. I also caught them no where near any of these nets.

Could that be white bass by chance ? Just curious ? Quite a few people refer to white bass as striped bass or "stripes". Usually when someone mentions "stripers" they are talking about rockfish. That's why Watts Bar banned gill nets 30 years ago because of loss of "stripers". The only reason I mention it is that you seldom see stripers caught in the lake.

You should try to snag a paddlefish somehow as the eggs / roe make up 25% of it's body weight and the price for a pound of caviar these days is way up there. Don't quote me on this but something like...$800.00 a pound ? I believe that's what a commercial fisherman told "Drumking" recently.

It's not white bass, TWRA is going to list them by the proper name. They don't stock white bass per their sheet, only white bass x striped bass hybrids and striped bass. Go check it out under Warmwater Fish Stockings.. They have lists for all fish stocked in all of the lakes.

I see that. Cool page and great info. I can see I'll be reading about what types of species and numbers are stocked in different lakes. Thanks for sharing.

i can tell you after spending an hour plus talking to a guy running his nets(this is what he told me): max length 900ft, most use 300' nets. they target catfish, carp and drum. have to have a commercial license to sell them at the markets, catfish have to be gutted.
