"Private" honey holes

action jackson - 10/6/2007 5:51 PM I myself and my partner work very hard on putting or fixing a place so we can depend on to tx fish and what is bad is you will find alot of lookers out on the water that all they do is look for someone fishing so they can learn something about fishing. We put alot of time in on our "private honey holes" to find someone watching them so they can call them selfs a fisherman .....

Maybe you should just invite them over and help them learn to fish better? I bet then, they would respect your spot and give you the right-of-way if they are in it when you are fishing a TX. You would also get the respect of every fisherman on the CFF for giving your time and knowledge to a fellow angler!

Lord. Imagine actually using the words "work very hard" to describe fishing. When it gets to the point where I feel like it is work, I'll ask for benfits, a 401K, major medical, and time off for holidays. When did fishing become work? But then again I guess if you expect a paycheck when you go out....it kinda makes sense...... ;)

Plus don't you just hate it when someone "looks" so they can learn more about fishing??? The gall of some people!!!! I've NEVER in my life tried to find out what someone was fishing with, the depth they were fishing, the color they were using, the area they were fishing, or the technique they were using. Shame, shame! Imagine, trying to LEARN. How terrible. By the way, if you believe that I'll sell you some ocean front property in Arizona.

Also, but just a bit curious. Can someone show me in the manual of the Secret "Real" Fishermen's Society that defines what it means to call someone a "fisherman"? Fast Boat? Lots of TX wins? Just looking?....... :)

I'm beginning to wonder about that one myself

This came up a few months ago when a "Real Fisherman" bashed someone for using live bait and having the gall to consider themselves one of this elite group.

Action, I know you to be a nice guy and very friendly. You have never in any way voiced yourself like that to me or anyone I know personally.

I hope you do realize what the guys are saying though. Nothing remains a secret on a lake with hundreds of fisherman out there and if you offer a ride or take a ride anf fish that stuff, why would that person or even yourself go back. Jon the Fisherman said it best, Its human nature. Its also human nature to get upset when you loose what you thought would remain a secret but its not a private pond. Its just gonna happen....

Next Saturday, there will be atleast 150 boats Bassfishing a TX on Chick with 2 people in about everyone of them. Thats 300 people, 600 eyes (providing them have them both) Not to mention all the non-Tx people out there. Imagine those numbers! No Secret is safe. Sorry. Not even when I do mine...

Now that's really funny BBass! I have had a great time learning from so many people on this forum and also sharing what I have learned on my own and from others. I take people fishing very frequently and I take them to my best spots for many different species. I tell them as much as I can about how I catch fish and they tell me a lot too. I keep catching more and more and more fish and I think that they do too. Using the resource wisely all of us will just keep catching more and more. I think it's funny about the whole thing about honey holes. If it was my job to catch fish I might be more intense about it but I show people my honey holes all the time and it's just amazing how fast people forget about the spots. Just a few months ago someone posted about a specific spot in Harrison bay and for about a month there were people on that spot all the time. It's like they never could find it before or something and now, there is nobody on it again. I still catch lots of fish on it and I would expect others do too but there is so much more to catching than just knowing where the fish are. Take a good depth finder out to the main lake and anybody can find fish, they are top to bottom in many places but the same guys catch all of the fish out of those spots.

I'm in this life to do as Gator said, to do unto others as I would have them do to me, and that's my final answer. Now, let's go find some fish together and catch some!!!!!!!!!!! If you are in my boat I'm on your team, I want you to catch as many or more than I do. I hope you all catch a bunch because of something that I have shared here. I have caught a lot more because of what many of you have shared.

Keep the competition friendly guys/gals, we're all in this together whether we like it or not.

I'm with Action Jackson. He is right on this one. You learn by going out and covering water and eliminating dead water. Is going out to watch a good fisherman just to learn their holes really all that ethical. You guys are defending these watchers like they are the victims. There are quite a few on here that just don't like tournaments. Just get over it. It is fun and its not just money. You cannot make money fishing unless you are extremely good and can sell yourself to sponsors. Let's see, last year my boat won about $8000 fishing tournaments. This year it might be half of that. Sounds pretty good until you consider the $40,000 boat, gas for it and the truck, rods, reels, line, lures, etc...

There are a lot of guys that spend a whole lot of time on the water practicing, putting out structure, etc. My practice rarely involves my normal spots but focuses on new water and its usually not that fun because I am eliminating a lot of un-productive water. If you can put in the effort and find good spots yourself that is fine, but going out not to fish but to watch others is pretty low in my book. I can guarantee you that CFF does not intentionally promote that behavior. Just my $0.02.

I'll buy that Lance. If people are just "spying" for holes, that to me is wrong! Now, if I'm out fishing and consistently see people fishing an area, I'm gonna get to it sooner or later. If thats what some people consider "watching" then whatever. I'm sure many are guilty.

Okay guys. I just have to ask. As a new boater on this lake, am I going to be making friends or enemies? I'm really looking forward to going out with my map/GPS to learn how to fish a body of water from what I myself have figured out. I know the community holes already, but I have been looking forward to digging a little deeper than that. Now I'm a little concerned.

Courtesy and respect for each other. I hope we are going to be friends.

Sunshine, just go and have fun, and do what you want. It is public water, and if someone gets upset dont loose a minutes sleep. If you have a chance to show someone else a good method or spot, please do so, and you will be admired by many on this site. Have fun!

thanks beetle spin i spent 6hrs late at night building rock piles so I didn,t have to worry about the lookers and the ones that often like to look from thier house to see were everyone is fishing . If they would put in the amount of time that I and my partner has they also would understand .it gets costly when you go and pre fish and and when you get there on tx day and you turn the corner and there they set on your rock pile that you spent olt of time and money on.......

Friends Sunshine! If you see me on the water, say hello, troll on over and fish!

I have had anglers move-in or start fishing where they saw me catch fish too. I don't think they were out there with the intent to lurk around waiting to see who was on fish, they just happened to see it and capitalized on it the next time they were out. I don't fish Tx for $$ but I make sacrifices and spend $$ to fish like everyone else so I know it can be dissapointing to see boats on a spot you were planning to fish after driving 20 miles. That's just the reality of fishing in sight of others on public water. I think it's also why lots of anglers like fast bass boats...to get to the best spots first. However, the fish will eventually move and there is really no way to hide from others on the water so I'll just try to get there early or start looking elsewhere.

I like to see other friendly anglers on the water and say hello. I'm sure 100% of the members who posted reports on CFF in the last 3 months would welcome you on the water so no worries.

Same here.

Eric Clark was fishing this week with his kiddo and getting some really good bites. He noticed me and told me to get over there and fish it. Picked up 2. Guess that still makes me part of "borrowed fish team"

I have no problem with tx fisherman as a whole. A few "elitist" type personalities give it a bad name sometimes. I was watching the Professional Tarpon Tournament on tv the other night and one of the pros lines got tangled with a "recreational" fisherman. The pro cut the guy's line and acted really po'ed about it. The announcer made the comment that the recreational anglers do not know to get out of the pros way....this was almost as if he were saying that the recreational angler had no business to be fishing there. I have seen the same attitude while watching bass tx on tv. I have had folks act that way to me on the water. I pass it off because I know those type folks are jerks in everything they do in life. I have no honey hole secrets...never have ...never will. God made the water for us all and no one has a right to claim it for himself alone.

To put it delicately, I would have been EXTREMELY mad if someone cut my line.

This brings up a good point. Does putting out structure for the sake of fishing a tourny make you a better fisherman? I know I will get a lot of flack for this but if you are a good fisherman why do you need to create your own wonderland of sturcture? I know people do it all the time and it adds habitat for the fish but it still seems a little strange. I like to fish tournys were eveyone has the same level playing field, that is when you find out who is the best fisherman (which most of the time I am not based on tourny winnings). Remeber 90% of fishing is finding fish. Once found anyone can catch them. Puting out structure and baiting it (which I hear happens on Chick) for the sake of earning a buck does not seem to be at the heart of what competitive fishing is all about. I know a lot of die hard Chick tourny guys that will not fish any other lake because they don't have their "honey" hole structure. I think the purpose of this website is to educate anglers so they can find fish no matter the body of water without needing to put out structure. The people that can do that are the good fishermen in my book.

But by all means keep putting it out. With the new depth finders someone will find it and it will become someone's new honey hole. Just a matter of time.

Well said Whiskers... we have a ton of crappie condos in Flint Creek on Wheeler, and I have seen plenty of people fishing them. Big deal, I'll fish 'em when somebody isn't out there. It benefits the fish and the fisherman. If you don't want other to have anything to do with your work you are putting in, find a private lake to drop it. Public waters is exactly that, public waters.

Mr. Wiskers, you have said it all. I agree with everything you have said. A good fisherman doesn't need "xtra's" to catch fish. If everyone on here went to a strange lake that they had never been before and went there to catch fish without a guide, the good fisherman would use his knoledge of fishing other lakes to fish this new lake and he would probably out fish everyone else. If he saw someone fishing a spot, he would try it also after the fisherman had left. He would ask dock operators where were the fish being caught yesterday, what bait was being used, do you fish with live bait, etc. He would use his depth finder to find bait and structure. He would use his instincts from past fishing trips to find fish. He would watch the blue herons, they hang out at spots that they consistantly find bait fish that have been wounded by big fish. The good fishermen would bring in the fish at day's end.

Git'em whiskers

I think it is funny how serious some people take fishing. I love fishing, but it does not ruin my day if someone else is on my spot. The key to being a good fisherman, is catching fish, no matter the conditions. If all your holes have someone sitting on them, then find them somewhere else. If you can't find them somewhere else, then you are just a legend in your own mind. Competition brings out the best and worst in people. Some can lose gracefully, and some just have to bixtch about it. If any of you see me fishing a spot, come on over and fish it with me. I have no problem sharing the water.

I also have added cover to Watts Bar, and have showed quite a few people where it was. You get what you give, and life is way too short to be pissed about a fishing hole.
