PVC is the way to go, it costs a little money unless you know a plumber or electrician who has lots of scraps. It lasts forever, and lures don't get hung in it. It also attracts algea quickly.

Now this is what discusion is supposed to bring out! Very good idea Lance....even if it is from a "TX guy"

I would be in for whatever I can do! I like the PVC idea, less hangs, and super cover for small fish....

It's a great idea Beetlespin. emoThumbsup

I recall a bunch of CFF members helped out TWRA last year putting out structure in Booker T. Washington State park: http://www.chattanoogafishingforum.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=6759&posts=10

I think your idea takes things to the next level with a lot of possibilities for making positive contributions adding habitat. There should be lots of old trees available in January, however, the effort could actually be scheduled over a few weeks/months allowing members to coordinate and contribute as they have time. We would need to be sure to verify any regulations on placing structure and that nothing gets placed too shallow. I'll be glad to maintain a list somewhere on the site of structure type, location, contributing member etc... Count me in!

JTF, I like those you made! I have some bamboo from the boy scout river race last month I was going to burn. I now have a new use for it!

I read in the past that there are certain regulations that prohibit placing
structure that is a hazzard to navigation. Also I would be concerned with the water dropping and someone getting pulled on or falling off of a tube and getting sliced open with bamboo sticking up. We need to really research this and make some guidelines so we don't expose ourselves to
liability or run afoul of regulations.

You are right tarheel, I put mine in deep water, and out of the marked channel. I built mine about ten foot tall, and they are in 15' of water when it is at winter pool.

You are very right Tarheel, and I wouldnt think any of us would dream of placing any structure like that in a place where it could harm rec. folks. I am thinking I would put mine out in deep water, say 20-40 ft depths.

Can someone get ahold of Matt majors to view this thread, and get his opinion?

I don't want to get anyone hurt, and that just takes a little comman sense.

People also need to realize that in navigable waters, the only place guarenteed to not have obstructions is between the markers. You ride outside the buoys at your own risk. Just make sure they are deep enough that even in winter, no one can hit them.

Great idea Lance. Rocky Mt in Ga has a specified spot for people to drop Christmas trees. Fishermen are then allowed to place the trees in the lake. Maybe someone could designate a spot for this purpose this year.

Enjoyed your post Sunshine! You said it very well. A true fisherman will locate and learn how to catch his own fish. I hope you're treated well on the water !

I don't see a need to wait until winter pool even though that will be very soon. I also think we all have enough common sense not to cause a hazard. 10-15 feet would be the minimum if we are in the main lake body. If we put structure in sloughs close to the banks then any water is fine as long as we don't get to close to docks where people don't want obstructions. I think the river ledge from the dam up to pinkeys point would be a good place to start. This would provide good summer fishing habitat. For spring fishing we could focus on points and sloughs. There aren't enough of us to put too much stuff in the water. We could do this every weekend for six months and not do enough. But its a start. Who wants to buy me a new Stihl chainsaw?

We should get with treeman. He should have plenty of wood since he is in the tree cutting business. Anymore ideas to secure brush? We will also need to secure some boats or something to take the brushes to the water. This isn't a good application for new bass boats. Big flat bottoms or pontoons are perfect.

I'll see and talk to treeman myself Wed Night at the DF.

Would 5 gallon Plastic buckets with cement or big rocks hold them down?

I will ask the new x-mas tree seller on HWY 58 what he is going to do with leftover trees. I have a big trailor that I could load down, and haul to say HB or Skull, then get some boats for runners to take them where we decide to place it out?

That is a good question Billy. I have never done this, and wonder if the sopt is not in strong current, if the x-mas trees would hold in place or not. I know I am giddy about having a place with a couple dozen trees for cover, loaded up with bait and crappie lurking around it.

I think putting the attractors in is a great idea. I do think that we need to get with TWRA and I also think we need to wait until winter pool for various reasons. Matt Majors would be the guy to go to, along with his dad. They did a great job and had plenty of help from CFF last year when we built the big one at Booker T.
