Rod useage

Chattanooga Fishing Forum

Help Support Chattanooga Fishing Forum:

Yeah I am always interested in blank details, especially from people who I respect their "expert" anyalsis such JM. Bateson/rainshadow, Shikari, and CTS were blanks I am considering.

To get back on track:

What action rod would you use

Crankbait -- moderate, flexs at least 1/3 down the blank, usually in low power.
Spinnerbait -- mod. but faster than a crankbait (my sb are usually smaller sizes)
Jerkbait -- give me a pool cue with a tip that is soft for the first 4-6", X-fast at least for hard jerks. For soft plastic sluggo type I like a moderate fast to fast action in lower power.
Buzzbait -- same as spinnerbait but in higher power due to heavy weight.
Rattle trap -- same as crankbait
Jig -- fast to x-fast, power is low for hair jigs and more mid-power for jig'n'pigs
Worm-- same as jig but a tad slower, overall usually med-fast to fast
Topwater -- same as hard jerks but soften the tip to 6-9"

Well ...

Off to engineering school I go because obviously to me at least, you have to have an engineering degree to even figure out what they are talking about. All this time I just picked up a pole and tied something on. Who knew it was sooooo complicated.

My opinion of the list:

Crankbait - rod next to the ladder in the garage
Spinnerbait - rod next to the ladder in the garage
Jerkbait - rod next to the ladder in the garage
Buzzbait - haven't fished with these .. but if I did, it would be with the rod next to the ladder in the garage
Rattle trap - rod next to the ladder in the garage
Jig - rod next to the ladder in the garage, sometimes a big toe
Worm - rod next to the ladder in the garage
Topwater - rod next to the ladder in the garage

:)

Soon I'll have 2 choices, once my FA rod gets rigged up ... then it will be either, rod next to the ladder in the garage or FA pole beside my bedroom night stand.

TT, Lots people confuse action with power. It doesn't help when the manufacters have no consistency in rating there rods so making a comparison based on the manufactors label is pointless.

Action is where the blank bends,
Power is how much weight it takes to bend it.

The engineering degree might be helpful, but you really need a physic degree to fully understandemoAngel . Assuming all rods have similar materials and similar thickness of the layer, the taper controls what type of action the rod will have. The material and thickness of layer have more control in power (along with starting and ending diameter).

It is still all a personal preference. Use what you know will work.emoThumbsup

RR,

Great details. But, a couple questions.

On the CR rod...what brand of 50lb braid would you spool her with? Just curious; I know sensitivity is a major factor, as well as being able to see/watch the line. Fortunately, there are a ton of choices out there but that just makes choosing one more difficult for me. I am a CR novice still learning this technique and can use the advice.

Also, since we're on the subject...what soft plastic do you normally throw with it? I am getting my CR pole rigged up for this season and your input would be greatly appreciated/helpful.

Thanks in advance.emoScratch emoScratch emoScratch emoScratch

Gunny, like whats been said before this is only an opinion. But I personally would not use braid with crankbaits unless it was with a lipless crank in heavy grass. The reason being that unless you're using a rod with a very soft tip you run the risk of ripping the hooks out of the fishes mouth on the hookset with braid because it doesn't stretch. The only reason to use it in grass is because in heavy grass the braid will help you cut through it a little better. That's just my $.02 and everyone has their reasons for the way we fish.
I have tried braid and flouro and I personally hate it for most situations.I will use braid for flipping, pitching, and C-rigging, and I use flouro for dropshoting and finesse worming but for everything else I use mono.

I think he was actually refering to the C-rig (CR) application, ranman. I too would never throw a crank on braid.

Gunny - for the braid on my C-rig rod, it is Power Pro. The leader is 12lb Trilene Big Game. As far as plastics, I'll use most anything, but it's usually a 6" or 8" lizard. I kinda like the strike king 3x plastics because they will float and not just drag, but some days they want one and not the other.

emoEvil Different opinion coming from me. I use braid on all my crankbaits. I like the thinner diameter and more sensitive nature of braid (PP) as it translate to me what structure I am running the crankbait into. As far as lipping hooks out, I don't think that has ever really happen. Of course that could be some of the difference between me and ranman style. Others tell me I use a softer rod than most, but I think it is because I don't swing a hookset (like bill dance) on a take on a crankbait. I do however try and change the fishes direction with sweep. Another difference could be that I don't reel them in as fast as possible, although I do reel in at steady pace and keep constant pressure. I also fish more rivers than reservoirs and that may bring about some differences that I don't fully understand.emoSmile
