this looks like its going be be a great ride comes out of the hole like a rocket, ive got 4 hours on the motor ran it up to 5700 rpms today gps went to 86 mph. its very quiet and smooth, i will give some more info when i get out of break-in restrictions.

Keep us posted on how it does. I am kicking around the idea of upgrading to this motor and I am curious as to how the fuel mileage is compared to my current 2 stroke. Have they told you what the cost of a routine service will be...oil and filter change?

oil change at todays price should run less than 150, 1st change after 20 hrs. then every 100 hours plus gear lube, a timing belt change at 1000 hrs. not to bad considering the cost of 1 gal of oil.

i would think you might benefit from adding the lower water pickups to the lower unit. i think its about $500 at hydrotec. i had mine modified so i can run it high and i would think you would need that on the bullet. they basically just drill out the lower unit and make it like a sportmaster low water pickups.

hydrotec had a 250 sho and with the mods on it, it ran right at 99+ with a 34 performer. so i think speed is achievable with the sho.
keep us updated!

I am pretty sure that motor comes factory with low water pick ups. The pics I have seen show the pointed nose cone and no visible water vents or pick ups on the side of the lower unit.

What prop and pitch are you running?

a tpx 29" tubro, 4 blade was the top performer at bridge port last week, so thats what i got !!!! you are right it does have low water pick ups

Steve ... how many quarts of oil does it take? What kind? And you said it was to be changed every 100 hours, right? And I would also like to hear about the fuel consumption. Remember when the Merc Optimax 225 adds were boasting about 4 mpg!? I know that is really good compared to other engines but it just "sounds" funny! Keep us posted!

It holds 7.1.quarts, im guessing but i would say thats about 55 5dollars . then a filter. and gear lube in the lower unit plus labor, im not sure but i bet that will be about 150 dollars. cant tell about the gas milage yet, ive only got 5 hours on the motor and breakin requires lots of sppeed changes with motor trimed down. i will keep you posted but it will be hard to beat pro xs milage, if it well just get close to that i would be happy. the engine requires yahamalube 4 stroke oil and maintance on a schedule with hours run. i dont know if regular motor oil would be a good decision .

here is the YouTube video of a 21 ft Stroker with the 250 SHO. 96 mph is pretty impressive for a 4 stroke!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S79ks-nPoE

That stroker had the lower unit mod that i was referring to. it was done on that boat to help it get to those speeds and the boat actually ran a faster speed than it did in that video. it ended up running at 99 and change. but with one or two simple mods.
I know the lower units have low water pickups, but this mod makes the water pickups in the front bottom portion of the lower unit bullet/nose (similar to a sportsmaster). it also includes sharpening the front edge of the gearcase to make it where its not so blunt. it will help you gain speed while also helping the driveability. just my opinion.

its been so bad still only got 5 hrs on it , ive got a list of about 5 little things to get better going to work on them this week, thanks for the info 99 from a 4 stroke, wow!!

Thanks for the info Jim. I should have known you were up to speed on the Hydro Tec info. It's amazing how they can find ways to get more out of a motor like that.

yeah, i got my hpdi lower unit back on mine now. if you want to see the mod, i can show you. but mine now has a one piece fat shaft. i ran it on Christmas eve. it ran in the 80s, but was too dang cold to run it hard for long. sorry for getting sidetracked.
keep us updated on it.

dont worry nickajack smack, I ran right beside you for miles with the sportmaster at 87-88 with a prop i had never ran before. the yamaha lower was about 4 or 4.5 mph faster before i short shafted the motor. i just havent had time to set it up and play with props....yet. to be honest, i dont know when im gonna have time to fool with it and its too dang cold anyway. but rest assured, when i do i will bring it down there to nickajack and run with you. hell you're in a bullet, im in a stratos. emoLaugh

the beer and pizza from mellow mushroom is on you when we do go make another run. emoLaugh

and whats this i hear about a new 21ss bullet? a 21'1" hull thats supposedly coming out. supposed to be fisherman friendly and fast. should be out sometime in Feb. i am interested in seeing that hull. that might get me out of the ole stratopotamus. emoLaugh
