Alright, ever time this comes up we find that the opinions on this topic are 50/50. Jason, I dont know why. In 1995 I caught a 9.25 pound Largemouth at Gville Lake. Its on my wall today. At that time I thought that I had to mount the fish???? If I caught one that I wanted to mount today, I recon I would go with the replica. But no way will I ever bash anybody for doing whatever he wants with any legal fish, how could I? Nice fish either way. By the way, I have not since caught one close to the size of my " trophy".

Its all in the mindset.......I have 2 on the wall from the early 80's. They was considered trophys by me, just like a deer mount, or my duck mount. Since then, I have had no desire to kill another fish. I take pics, however, I will say that whomever catches it, it is certainly their business. If I am around at the time, I try to encourage the release of a fish, but I dont put the person down, if he or she decides that they want it. Everybody has the right to do what they want so long as no State Reg has been broken. Actually the truth be known, it probably helps a lake to take some out....just my .02

I personally release any fish that I catch thats of any size with the exception being panfish but if he wants to keep it then go ahead as long as its legal. The only way I would consider keeping a large fish is if I thought there were some chance of a state or world record.

Geez guys, give Big-L a break. Remember, "Let he that is without sin cast the first stone.' Good words to (try to) live by. Just drop it.

Mounts look good on the walls, I'm just not good enough to have one on there :)

I am thinking about getting a replica mount of my 68 lb Blue Cat... butttttt, that would probably cost $1000 emoAngry

Your hypotesis about removing older trophy fish is correct. The reason a slot limit works so well on trophy waters is that younger and older fish are removed making room for the most productive breeders. I am not preaching, I have spent a lot of time studying fisheries biology. Seems that the fish are alot like humans, the older we get the less productive we are. In the upper Tennessee River you chances of seeing a 10 pound largemouth are few. The growing seasons are to short and it is difficult to achieve that weight within a largemouth's lifespan. I have seen three in 30 years of fishing within the state of TENNESSEE.You are actually more likely to see a ten pound smallmouth than a largemouth. As in real estate it is location, location, location.

We are situated at the northern edge of larger largemouth growing potential. The farther south you travel the longer the growing season and the possibility of larger fish. The same is true for smallmouth the farther south you travel the greater the possibility for increased growth. While we are on the northern fringe for largemouth, we are at the southern fringe for smallmouth. Check the BASS lunker pages, most largemouth over ten pounds come from areas south of Tennessee.

Back to my initial point, removing older trophy fish does not hurt a population. It actually will increase the chance for you to catch the offspring of that fish, which reach the same weight as their parent, because they have the food supply available for growth. As an angler you will also open spawning space to the offspring of your trophy and their progeny, so the genetics for larger growth are passed on to future generations in greater numbers.

Just playing, didn't mean to get a battle going. I have to admit that I have a 6.5 on the wall and was dang proud of it.emoAngel

Jason, in my opinion the purpose for mounting a fish, no BASS, is the same as hauling one (or 5) around in your live well for 4-8+ hours that you just caught off of a bed to take in in front of 1 or thousands of people to win bragging rights, a trophy, new truck and boat or $1 or a million dollars. I personally see no difference what so ever.

If it was a 2 lb bluegill, 3 pound crappie, 30 pound catfish, stripe, drum, gar, carp, goggle eye, shad, skipjack, shell cracker, warmouth, you name it, that he supposedly took home to eat, mount or feed to his cats then we would not be having this conversation. As a matter of fact, some may even APPLAUD that you took that "junk" fish out of the water. Why? Because there is not an organization called D.R.U.M. or C.A.R.P., etc

Make that TWO!

I would however like to mount something from the secret hole just to prove I had gone since no one will ever believe I went there whenever it is I get to go.

TT

Nope. The best I could do would be a 8X10 glossy of you and the catch, but you will have to wait until next spring. Looks like after a little research this fall that the original secret hole is only good for the biguns in the spring.

Wow,

This is the first time I have been a member of this forum and seen a little heated debate. I must admit, I did enjoy it. Being that I moved down from Indiana, the growing seasons seems just fine down here in Tennessee :) Judging by the blue cats and stripers I have seen, it is just fine.
