I did speak with Jim and the reason we have to disagree is simply because he is wrong. These are beneficial chemicals that CAN poison if used improperly. Like asprin, table salt, rubbing alcohol, washing detergent, paint, and the plastic used in artficial lures and worms.....etc etc etc. Thus the cautioning statements. However, we use them properly. These are herbicides that kill plants not animals. I KNOW aquatic herbicide applications are the right approach to controlling invasive aquatic plants. That is not a belief, it is a fact. Unlike the myths, rumors, and lies that several of the folks on this blog choose to blindly follow.

Billyc,

I'm not going away in any fashion. Actually, I'll be working on Chickamauga tomorrow. Providing the appropriate service for the aquatic vegetation issues.

Skidrow37,

Take a fisheries course. Or just study a little bit. Natural fish mortality is common for numerous reasons. Has nothing to do with herbicides we have applied. Could be disease, parasites, weakness due to spawning, etc. Just wondering, have you ever been on the water a day or two after a fishing tournament? Go look for dead fish then, no little one but big ones. I can assure you the numbers are high.

Yes i've been on the water after tourney's and I have seen dead bass afterwards. I didn't ask about the bigger fish only the bait fish. I wasn't tryin to be a smartass I was just wondering if it was harmful to the smaller more vulnerable fish.

Once again, if money and politics were on their side we would not have a permitting process in the first place. It is because of fishermen and environmentalists that we have to work through such a difficult permitting process.

Troy

Do you view either or both of these two groups as an adversary?

Do you think both groups are wrong?

Weren't environmentalists responsible for bringing attention to the fact that America's waterways were polluted many years ago?

Would your business life be a lot easier if both groups kept quiet?

I hope you consider these questions worthy of an answer. And yes, I have read every word in this thread.

hey troy want you come over to chester frost park boat ramp and broadcast what you do and see what kind of resuts you get . i bet you want like it.

So are you saying it took a court order for you to get to use these chemicals or am I reading your response to my question wrong? If it did take a court order, which waterway does the judge live on?

I think all these "connected" homeowners should yell at TVA and get the water to stay at full pool so I don't have to watch for stumps or rockpiles in the wintertime and look at all that yucky mud. It is very unsightly compared to green grass.

Don't think this is a necessary comment. The man is trying to post to educate and help people understand what his job duty is , and answer questions about it.

Troy was there several weeks back and I posted it as soon as I knew. the only fishermen that showed up were Steve Kite, Chris Coleman, and myself. that's when I had a chance to actually meet him. TDEC and the department of agriculture were there in a boat watching his every move. They showed up, because I filed a complaint with state based on the gps coordinates TDEC provided me. I was concerned spraying would be done in areas greater than 100ft. from permanent structures. I was wrong and both the agents with the state and myself were impressed with Troy's application and his strict adherence to the permitted laws.
Our fight needs to be against the permitting process, not Troy. Trust me, as the weeds spread, and they will, there will be more spraying. We can only hope someone as professional as him doing the application.

Don't make this a personal deal with him, as he has gone above and beyond to give us his side of the story, and he has stones for making that leap.

Skidrow37,

Really sorry for lumping you in with several of the posts leading up to yours. But, the answer is the same that I posted last night. There are several reasons for natural mortality in small fish and big fish. Don't hold my last post to you against me, I do apologize.

Gobigorange,

I can provide those or the Tennessee dept. Of environment and conservation field office in Chattanooga.

Troy

Is this something that could be posted in a thread on here? Would like to see a list for Chickamauga, Nickajack, and Guntersville. emoScratch

Just look up the number for the Chattanooga Field office for TDEC. Ask for Dick Urban. He can give you all of the GPS coordintes for the permited spraying areas. Keep in mind, those coordinates are not literal and only give the general area to be sprayed.

Also, guys, many of you dont realize that Alabama does not have a state permiting process in place meaning as long as you follow the label, anyone can apply. Also, the 100' rule does not apply there as well, thats why all of Roseberry was able to be killed, and I agree with the fishermen here. I dont know anyone who is happy about the spraying.

Guys this is a fight that reared its head over 20 years ago and its not gonna go away soon. There will always be a rift between the fishermen and the majority of the land owners. we are either going to keep fighting or compromise. All I want is for clean safe water and good fishing. I still say the most powerful and effective way to handle this right now is to pound on our elected officials....

This thread should be frozen, I believe some members have lowered themselves to petty name calling and "he said she said." It's run its course, with good info on both sides.

Troy,
Thanks for coming on and answering questions. I've fished the Chick for 35 years and I've seen it through good and bad. In my personal opinion, spraying is needed in moderation and under strict control. All people (fisherman, boaters, landowners) should reach a happy medium with the spraying. Problem was in the 80's that there was no moderation. The vegetation was erradicated by spraying and it took about 12 years before the lake started to improve. I duck hunt too and I have seen a steady increase in migrating ducks since the weeds have come back in the lake. At least with you, we are getting information and answers. And we are also getting the opportunity to come out and witness your herbicide applications. As far as I know, none of us fisherman got the chance to do that in the 80's. I apologize for some of the comments that have been made on here. For some of those who have posted that "poison is poison", I have a question for you: what do you think is on every vegetable, fruit, or food that you buy? Do you smoke? Do you drink alcohol? Do you chew tobacco or dip snuff? Do you let your children play in the yard after you apply weed killer? Do you burn gasoline or breath exhaust? I bet most of us work for companies that release toxins into the environment (power plants, chemical plants, etc.). Churly and some of you folks are taking the right stance on this. Fisherman need to make noise, thats what will keep this spraying in check. It won't stop, but I believe it will reduce excessive and careless spraying.

Extremely well stated Churly. It can be very difficult to stand in the middle and try to weigh both sides fairly and openly. Troy is not the only one who obviously has stones. I congratulate you.

This is garbage.

Troy stepped up to the plate to inform those who want to learn. Should we take everything he has said as 100% accurate and un-biased? That is a personal decision. To call a man out is risky to say the least, and totally unnecessary, solving nothing.

Keep this thread civil so it does not get frozen.
